Study in Spain

Prestigious universities, programs taught in English and 300 days of sunshine a year. And as a Romanian you are an EU citizen, so you pay EU fees, drastically lower than a non-European student.

Spain has become one of the most sought-after study destinations in Europe for Romanians: a combination of solid universities, over 500 bachelor's programs taught in English, a cost of living below the UK or the USA, plus a culture and a climate that make student life incredibly enjoyable. From Barcelona to Madrid, Valencia and Pamplona, you have options at both large, affordable public universities and world-renowned private business schools.

For Romanian students, the decisive advantage: you are an EU citizen. At Spanish public universities you pay EU fees (between 750 EUR and 2,500 EUR per year), not the fees for non-Europeans, which can be several times higher. The Romanian Baccalaureate is recognized through the UNEDasiss system (you obtain a Credencial de acceso), and you apply directly to each university or through regional portals, not through a single system like UCAS or the Common App. At the private business schools (IE, ESADE, Navarra), the tuition is the same for everyone, but the value of the degree on the global market is enormous.

The EU advantage for Romanians

Unlike a student from the USA, India or China who pays non-EU international fees (1,500 EUR up to 6,000 EUR per year at public universities, sometimes more), you as a Romanian pay the same EU fee as a Spaniard at public universities. In practice, the same education at a fraction of the cost a non-European pays. This makes Spain one of the best cost-to-quality opportunities in the world for a Romanian student.

Frequently asked questions

What Romanian students and their parents ask most often about studying in Spain.

How much do Romanians pay at public universities in Spain?

As a Romanian citizen, you are an EU citizen, so at Spanish public universities you pay EU fees, exactly like a Spaniard: typically between 750 EUR and 2,500 EUR per year, depending on the region and program. A non-European student (from the USA, India or China) pays non-EU international fees that can be several times higher (1,500 EUR up to 6,000 EUR per year or more). This is the single biggest financial advantage of your EU citizen status.

How is the Romanian Baccalaureate recognized in Spain?

The Romanian Baccalaureate is recognized through the UNEDasiss system, managed by UNED (the Spanish state distance-learning university). You obtain a Credencial de acceso, the official document that lets you apply to Spanish universities. Depending on the program, you can optionally sit specific exams through UNEDasiss to raise your admission grade for highly competitive faculties (Medicine, for example). We guide you step by step through this process.

Can I study in Spain in English?

Yes. Spain offers over 500 bachelor's programs taught in English. International private universities such as IE University teach 100% of their programs in English, and public ones such as UPF, UPV and UAB have more and more programs in English, especially in Business, Economics, Engineering and Computer Science. Many public programs do remain in Spanish or Catalan, however, so for those a good level of Spanish helps. We help you identify exactly the right English-taught programs for you.

How do you apply to universities in Spain?

Unlike the UK (UCAS) or the USA, Spain does not have a single application system. You apply directly to each university or through regional portals (for example for the public universities in Catalonia or Madrid). The typical steps: 1) obtain the Credencial de acceso through UNEDasiss, 2) check each program's requirements, 3) apply online to the university or the regional portal, 4) submit your documents and, where applicable, proof of language. The private universities (IE, ESADE, Navarra) have their own admissions process, often with an interview.

What is the difference between public and private universities in Spain?

Public universities (UB, UAB, UPF, UAM, UCM, UPV) are very affordable for Romanians thanks to EU fees (750 EUR up to 2,500 EUR per year) and have a solid academic tradition and strong reputations in research. Private business schools (IE, ESADE, Navarra with IESE) cost significantly more (15,000 EUR up to 25,000 EUR plus per year, the same tuition for all students regardless of citizenship), but they offer teaching 100% in English, a strongly international community, a corporate network and remarkable employability on the global market.

How much does student life cost in Spain?

The cost of living in Spain is between 600 EUR and 1,100 EUR per month, depending on the city, below the UK and the USA. Madrid and Barcelona are the most expensive for housing, while cities like Valencia, Granada or Pamplona are more affordable. This amount typically covers housing, food, public transport and activities. Many students rent rooms in shared apartments (piso compartido), the most economical option. As an EU citizen you also have the right to work part-time during your studies.

Do I need a visa to study in Spain?

No. As a Romanian citizen you are an EU citizen, so you have the right to free movement and you do not need a student visa for Spain. You enroll freely, enter with your ID card or passport and, if you stay longer than 90 days, you register with the local authorities to obtain your NIE number (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) and your EU residence certificate. The process is simple, without the quotas and restrictions that non-European students face.

Which university in Spain is the best fit for me?

It depends on your field, budget and language of study. For Medicine and Sciences: UB, UAM, UCM. For Economics and Business at a public university: UPF (Barcelona School of Economics). For Engineering and Tech: UPV. For international Business in English with a global network: IE University, ESADE, Navarra (IESE). If you want minimal costs, prioritize the public universities (EU fees). If you want a 100% international community and teaching entirely in English, the private universities are the choice.
