Study in Europe for Romanians
The most accessible destination for Romanian students. Free programs in Germany and Denmark, fees under 300 EUR per year in France, and universities such as Bocconi, Sciences Po and TU Delft within reach.
For Romanian students, Continental Europe is the most accessible destination for international study. As an EU citizen, you are entitled to the same fees as local students, a huge difference compared to the USA or the UK where you pay international (non-EU) rates. In some countries that means completely free (Germany, Denmark), while in others you pay under 300 EUR per year (France) or a few thousand per year (Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Ireland).
The Romanian Baccalaureate is accepted at most European universities, with assessment and conversion to the local system. For bachelor's programs taught in English there are over 2,500 options across the EU. Applications are made individually to each university, with deadlines generally in spring or summer for the academic year that begins in autumn. Important: the Erasmus plus program is for mobility (1-2 semesters during your studies), not for a full bachelor's degree abroad.

Talk to a mentor →The advantage of EU citizenship
As a Romanian citizen, you are automatically an EU citizen. This is the biggest financial advantage you have over a student from outside the Union.
EU fees, not international fees
At European public universities you pay the same fee as local students, not the non-EU rate which can be 5 to 10 times higher. On a program in the Netherlands, an EU citizen pays 2,601 EUR per year, while a non-EU student pays between 8,000 and 20,000 EUR per year for the same degree.
No student visa
As an EU citizen you have free movement within the Schengen area and the EEA. You do not need a student visa, you do not file an application at the embassy and you do not have to prove funds to obtain a residence permit, unlike students who go to the USA or the UK.
Access to scholarships and local support
EU citizens are eligible for national scholarships and student support in the host country in many cases (for example CROUS in France, SU in Denmark for those who work part-time). You also have access to the Erasmus plus program for a semester or two in a third country.
The right to work and stay
You can work part-time with no hour restrictions during your studies and you can stay to work after graduation without a separate work permit. A degree earned in an EU country is automatically recognized across the Union, including upon returning to Romania.
Notes on costs: tuition and living costs are indicative for the 2025-26 academic year and refer to the rates for EU citizens (statutory or resident). Rates for non-EU students are significantly higher and are not included here. The fee in France combines the enrollment contribution (178 EUR) and the CVEC fee (105 EUR). In Italy, fees at public universities depend on family income declared through ISEE.
The Romanian Baccalaureate is accepted at most universities, but each institution has its own requirements for grade average, language (TOEFL or IELTS for English-taught programs) and application deadlines. Erasmus plus covers mobility of 1-2 semesters, not a full bachelor's degree. Always check the official information on each university's website before applying.
