The 8 Ivy League universities
Harvard, Yale, Princeton and the rest of the Ivy League universities. The most prestigious universities in the USA and the most generous scholarship packages for Romanian students from middle or lower income families.
The Ivy League is an athletic conference founded in 1954 between 8 private universities in the northeastern USA, which over time became a synonym for academic excellence: a tradition of more than 250 years, alumni networks that dominate Wall Street, Washington and Silicon Valley, a flexible curriculum (you choose your major in year 2 or 3) and scholarship packages more generous than any other American university.
For Romanian students, the essential part: 5 of the 8 Ivy universities are need-blind for international students (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown from the Class of 2029, Dartmouth) and cover 100% of demonstrated financial need. The other 3 (Columbia, UPenn, Cornell) are need-aware, but still cover 100% of need for those admitted. You apply through the Common App, and the Baccalaureate is accepted alongside the SAT or ACT.

How to apply to the Ivy League
The process is similar at all 8 universities, through the Common App, but each has its own supplemental essays and a different ED versus REA strategy.
Common App (all 8 accept it)
All 8 Ivies use the Common App, the standard form for up to 20 universities. It contains a personal statement (650 words) plus supplemental essays specific to each university.
SAT or ACT (2025-26 policies)
Required at most (Harvard, Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell, UPenn, Yale). Columbia and Princeton remain test-optional. Target: 1500+ SAT or 34+ ACT. For Romanians, TOEFL 100+ or IELTS 7.0+.
Specific supplemental essays
Each Ivy asks for 2-5 supplemental essays (200-400 words). Harvard asks for 5 short essays, Yale a "Why Yale" plus short answers. For 5-7 applications: 20-30 essays in total.
Recommendations (2 teachers plus counselor)
2 teachers (ideally one in sciences, one in humanities) plus your form teacher. In English or officially translated. Yale and Harvard optionally accept a third recommendation from a coach or mentor.
ED versus REA strategy (critical!)
5 Ivies have binding Early Decision (Brown, Columbia, UPenn, Cornell, Dartmouth). 3 have non-binding REA (Harvard, Yale, Princeton). If you need a large scholarship, choose REA so you can compare offers.
Deadlines plus strategy for Romanians
Early: 1-15 November. Regular: 1-15 January. They all fall before the Baccalaureate (June-July), so you apply with your current transcript; the Baccalaureate confirms graduation after admission.
Why choose the Ivy League
Four advantages that make the Ivy League unique, especially for Romanian students with high financial need.
The most generous scholarships for Romanians
5 of the 8 Ivies are need-blind for international students, and all cover 100% of financial need for admitted students. For a family from Romania with an income under 100,000 USD per year, the net cost can be 0-15,000 USD annually. Harvard offers free tuition for families under 200,000 USD per year.
Unmatched global prestige
Harvard (1636), Yale (1701), Princeton (1746). The Ivy League is recognized in any country, including in Romania, where a Harvard or Yale on your CV opens doors with employers, master's programs and doctoral schools. 8 of the last 15 American presidents studied at an Ivy League school.
Liberal arts and academic flexibility
Unlike European universities, the Ivies use the liberal arts model: in the first 2 years you explore multiple fields, you declare your major in year 2 or 3 and you can change it. Brown has a unique Open Curriculum. Ideal for a student who is still unsure what they want to do.
Access to the Boston-NY-Washington corridor
All 8 are in the northeastern USA, with access to the largest job markets for investment banking, consulting, government and media. Summer internships paid 8,000-12,000 USD per month are common. Active Romanian communities in Boston and New York help you adapt.

What Romanian students and their parents ask most often about the Ivy League.
What is the Ivy League and which are the 8 universities?
The Ivy League formed as an athletic conference in 1954 between 8 private universities in the northeastern USA: Harvard (Cambridge, MA), Yale (New Haven, CT), Princeton (Princeton, NJ), Columbia (New York, NY), University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, PA), Brown (Providence, RI), Cornell (Ithaca, NY) and Dartmouth (Hanover, NH). Over time it became a synonym for academic excellence. The "Big Three" (Harvard, Yale, Princeton) are traditionally the most prestigious and selective.
Which Ivies are need-blind for Romanian students?
5 of the 8 are need-blind for all applicants, including Romanians: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown (from the Class of 2029) and Dartmouth. These do not take your financial capacity into account at admission and cover 100 percent of demonstrated need. The other 3 (Columbia, UPenn, Cornell) are need-aware for international students, but all those admitted receive 100 percent need met. The practical takeaway: if you need a large scholarship, prioritize the 5 need-blind universities.
How much does a year at the Ivy League cost and how much do Romanians pay with a scholarship?
The sticker price (official cost) is between 85,000 USD and 95,000 USD per year. For Romanians with a family income under 75,000 USD, Harvard and Yale fully cover tuition plus housing (net cost close to zero). Under 100,000 USD family income, the net cost is typically 0-15,000 USD per year. Princeton replaces all loans with grants. Important: 100 percent meet need also applies to the need-aware universities (Columbia, UPenn, Cornell) if you are admitted.
What is the difference between ED (Early Decision) and REA (Restrictive Early Action)?
ED is binding: if you are admitted you must enroll. 5 Ivies have ED: Brown, Columbia, UPenn, Cornell, Dartmouth. REA is non-binding: you can decide until May. 3 Ivies have REA: Harvard, Yale, Princeton. For Romanians: with ED you commit to paying whatever tuition they offer, without comparing scholarship offers. With REA you can wait for all the offers. If you need a large scholarship, choose REA or Regular Decision. Early rates are 2-3 times higher than Regular.
How many Ivies should I apply to in my strategy?
A typical strategy for an ambitious applicant: 4-6 Ivy universities plus 4-6 top non-Ivy (MIT, Stanford, Caltech, Duke) plus 2-3 target universities plus 2-3 safety. Total 12-15 applications (the Common App allows a maximum of 20). For Early: a single ED application (binding) or a single REA at one of the Big Three. Do not copy other people's lists; choose based on the academic, geographic and financial fit for you.
Harvard vs Yale vs Princeton: which is the best?
The Big Three are comparable in prestige and all are need-blind for international students. Harvard is a generalist, strong in business, medicine, law, government, with the largest alumni network. Yale is the strongest for humanities, drama, law and IR. Princeton is the smallest and most focused on undergraduate education, top for math, physics, economics and public policy, and replaces all loans with grants. All 3 have admission rates under 5 percent.
Can I study at Cornell or UPenn without money for tuition?
Yes, but it is riskier than at Harvard, Yale or Princeton. Cornell and UPenn are need-aware for international students, so if you ask for a large scholarship, your admission chances drop. But if you are admitted, you receive 100 percent of need met (at UPenn through grants, without loans). Strategically: apply to the 5 need-blind universities as a priority and to Cornell, UPenn or Columbia as secondary options if your academic profile is very strong.
Is the Romanian Baccalaureate enough for admission to the Ivy League?
No, but it is an important component. Admission is based on a holistic profile: 1) the high school transcript (grades 9-12, ideally averages above 9.50), 2) SAT or ACT (required at most, target 1500+ SAT), 3) TOEFL or IELTS (target TOEFL 100+ or IELTS 7.0+), 4) personal statement (650 words), 5) specific supplemental essays, 6) 2 recommendations from teachers plus 1 from a counselor, 7) extracurricular activities, leadership, awards. The Baccalaureate appears as a final confirmation of graduation after admission.
