Yale University
The third-oldest university in the USA, founded in 1701. Need-blind for international students and financial aid that covers 100 percent of demonstrated need. A residential college system, more than 65 affiliated Nobel laureates and 5 US presidents among its alumni.

About Yale
Yale University was founded in 1701, making it the third-oldest university in the USA, after Harvard and William & Mary. The main campus is in New Haven, Connecticut, a college town on the East Coast, roughly 2 hours from New York and 2.5 hours from Boston by train. The campus's Gothic architecture, with its towers and courtyards, is one of the most recognizable in America. Today the university has around 6,800 undergraduate students and a total of more than 15,000 including the graduate and professional schools (Law, Medicine, School of Management, School of Drama).
Yale's academic system is built around the liberal arts. You do not apply to a specific major at admission: you apply to Yale College, and you declare your major only in year 2. There are more than 80 majors available, from Computer Science, Economics and Molecular Biology to Global Affairs, History of Art or Ethics, Politics & Economics. Yale is renowned for its small seminar-style courses and for direct access to distinguished professors from the very first year.
The heart of student life is the residential college system: 14 residential colleges (Branford, Saybrook, Pierson, Davenport and others) to which you are assigned from your first year and where you stay for the entire duration of your studies. Each college has its own dining hall, library, courtyard and a Head of College who lives alongside the students. Your college becomes your core community on campus.
For Romanian students: Yale is one of the few universities in the USA that is need-blind for international students (admission decisions do not take financial situation into account) and covers 100 percent of demonstrated need, exclusively through grants, with no loans. Many families with modest incomes pay a contribution of zero. Notable alumni: 5 US presidents (among them Bill Clinton, both Bushes and William Howard Taft), Hillary Clinton, Meryl Streep, Jodie Foster, Paul Krugman and numerous Nobel laureates.
How to apply to Yale
Common App, Coalition or QuestBridge
Yale accepts three platforms. The Common App is the most popular. You fill in personal details, activities, essays and pay $80 (a waiver is available if you demonstrate financial need).
SAT or ACT (required)
Yale reinstated standardized testing from the 2025-26 cycle. Competitive score: SAT 1500+ or ACT 33+. Yale also accepts AP or IB as an alternative under its test-flexible policy.
TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo
For Romanians, proof of English is standard: TOEFL iBT recommended 100+, IELTS 7.0+, Duolingo 130+. Note: these do NOT replace the SAT/ACT, they are additional requirements.
Personal Statement + Yale supplement
A 650-word Personal Statement plus short Yale-specific essays (about your academic interests and why you chose Yale). The most important part of the application after grades.
Recommendations
2 recommendations from teachers (preferably different subjects, in English or officially translated) plus 1 from a counselor. A major document in the decision.
Alumni interview (optional)
You may be contacted by a Yale alumnus in your area for an informal interview (there is an alumni network in Romania). It is not mandatory, but it is an opportunity.
Costs and financial aid
Total cost of attendance 2025-26
Additional costs for Romanians
You pay $0
Families with a typical annual income under $75,000 (approximately RON 345,000) and limited assets have an estimated parental contribution of zero. Yale fully covers tuition, housing, meals and personal expenses.
Reduced contribution
Families in this range receive substantial grants, contributing an amount calculated based on income and assets. The package does not include loans.
Personalized aid
Families with income over $200,000 may still receive aid, depending on assets, siblings in college and other circumstances. Yale reviews each case individually.

What is the admission rate at Yale for Romanians?
The overall admission rate for the Class of 2028 was 3.7 percent. For international students it is even more competitive. Each year, Yale admits on average 1 to 3 Romanian students (an approximate figure, as Yale does not publish a country-by-country breakdown). Alongside Harvard, Columbia and Princeton, Yale has one of the lowest admission rates in the Ivy League.
How much does Yale cost per year for a Romanian student and what financial aid can I receive?
The total cost of attendance in 2025-26 is approximately $90,975, made up of tuition ($67,250), housing and meals ($20,250), student activities fee ($125), health insurance (~$2,950) and personal expenses (~$3,700). Plus initial costs: SEVIS $350, F-1 visa $185, application fee $80, TOEFL ~$220.
But: if you are admitted, Yale pays the entire difference between the cost and what your family can afford, through a non-repayable grant. Families with a typical income under $75,000 have a contribution of zero. More than 50 percent of students receive aid; the average scholarship exceeds $70,000 per year.
What does need-blind for internationals mean and why does it matter?
Need-blind means that the admission decision is made without seeing the family's financial capacity. The admissions committee evaluates only your academic and personal profile. If you are admitted, Yale commits separately to cover 100 percent of your demonstrated need.
In the USA, only a few universities are need-blind for internationals: Yale, Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Brown (Class of 2029+), Dartmouth (Class of 2026+), Amherst, Bowdoin. The rest of the Ivies (Columbia, UPenn, Cornell) are need-aware for internationals. It is an important factor for families who need financial aid.
What SAT/ACT scores do I need for Yale?
Yale has returned to a standardized testing requirement under a test-flexible policy (SAT, ACT, AP or IB). Competitive profile: SAT 1500 plus (out of 1600) or ACT 33 plus (out of 36). The median of admitted students is close to the top end of these ranges.
Important: there is no official cutoff. Yale does not admit by-the-numbers; a slightly lower score with an extraordinary extracurricular profile and excellent essays can compete with a perfect score with an average profile. But most admits have scores of 1500+. For Romanians, I recommend taking the SAT/ACT with at least 1 to 2 attempts for the best score.
What are the deadlines for Single-Choice Early Action and Regular Decision?
Yale offers two ways to apply:
Single-Choice Early Action (SCEA): deadline November 1, decision in mid-December. You cannot apply simultaneously to Early Decision or Early Action at other private universities (exception: public universities). You are not obliged to enroll if you are admitted and you have time to decide until May 1.
Regular Decision (RD): deadline January 2, decision in late March or early April. You can apply anywhere else without restrictions.
Recommendation: apply SCEA if Yale is clearly your first choice and your profile is complete in October.
Is the Romanian Baccalaureate accepted at Yale?
Yes, Yale accepts the Romanian Baccalaureate, but not as a replacement for the SAT/ACT. Standardized testing is part of the requirements. The Baccalaureate is part of your academic transcript and is evaluated alongside your high school grade averages, AP or IB (if you have them), class rank and extracurricular activities.
Recommendation for Romanians: an ideal profile includes an overall average of 9.80 plus at the Baccalaureate, grades of 9.50 plus in subjects relevant to the intended major, SAT 1500 plus and extracurriculars with measurable impact (national olympiads, projects, leadership, sustained volunteering).
How do I get the F-1 visa for the USA as a Romanian citizen?
After you receive the Letter of Admission and the I-20 from Yale, the process is standardized:
1) You pay the SEVIS fee online: $350.
2) You complete the DS-160 form online and pay the visa fee: $185.
3) You schedule an interview at the US Embassy in Bucharest, on Bulevardul Liviu Rebreanu 4-6. Summer is the busiest period; schedule 2 to 3 months in advance.
4) At the interview you present: passport, the I-20 form, proof of SEVIS payment, proof of funds for the first year (the Yale financial aid letter plus a bank statement), a US visa-type photo, the admission letter.
5) The decision is usually made on the spot. The passport with the F-1 visa arrives by courier in 5 to 10 business days.
Is there a Romanian community at Yale or in the New Haven area?
Yes. Yale has an active international community, and Romanian students connect through cultural student organizations and through the regional alumni network. New Haven is roughly 2 hours from New York, home to one of the largest Romanian communities in the USA, with Romanian Orthodox churches, restaurants and shops selling Romanian products.
The nearest airport is New York (JFK or Newark), with flights to Bucharest via a short layover (LOT via Warsaw, Lufthansa via Frankfurt). Total flight time: 11 to 14 hours.
