About Duke

Duke University is located in Durham, North Carolina, 4 hours from Washington DC and 2 hours from Charlotte. The 3,500-hectare campus is split into East Campus (Georgian style, freshmen only) and West Campus (Collegiate Gothic, upperclassmen, with the emblematic 64-metre-tall Duke Chapel). Plus Duke Forest (3,000 hectares of woodland). Founded in 1838 as Brown's Schoolhouse, it became Trinity College in 1859 and was renamed Duke in 1924 after the Duke family's $40M donation (tobacco industry).

Duke is part of the Research Triangle together with UNC Chapel Hill and NC State University, a biotech/pharma/IT research cluster with thousands of companies (GSK, IBM, Cisco). Students have direct access to internships and research at these companies.

Duke has 2 undergraduate schools: Trinity College of Arts and Sciences (~5,500 students, ~50 majors, liberal arts) and the Pratt School of Engineering (~1,300 students, 4 departments: BME, CEE, ECE, MechE). You decide at admission which is your first choice. Plus famous programs: Duke Medical School (#3 USA), the Sanford School of Public Policy (top USA), and the Fuqua School of Business, MBA only (Tim Cook is an alumnus). There is NO undergraduate business degree: the alternatives are Economics, Markets and Management Studies (certificate). Defining culture: basketball (8 NCAA championships, the Cameron Crazies, the Krzyzewski era).

How to apply to Duke

1

Common App, Coalition or QuestBridge

Duke accepts all three platforms. When you apply, you choose Trinity or Pratt as your first option. You can also mark a second alternative. Switching after admission is possible but difficult for Pratt (math requirements).

2

Deadline: ED Nov 1 (binding) or RD Jan 2

Duke uses binding Early Decision. Decision on December 15. ED rate Class of 2029: 12.8% (849 admitted out of 6,627 applicants). RD rate Class of 2029: 3.67% record low. The large ED vs RD gap makes Duke an ideal candidate for ED if you are sure.

3

SAT/ACT test-optional through 2026-27

Duke is test-optional for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 admission cycles. The policy is "no-disadvantage": you are not penalized if you do not submit. For Romanians with an SAT of 1500+ or ACT of 34+, it is recommended to submit. Admitted profiles: SAT 1490-1560, ACT 34-35. Duke code: 5156. Duke will reassess the policy for the Class of 2031 (fall 2027 entry).

4

Duke Supplement: "Why Duke" plus short ones

In addition to the Common App essay, Duke requires 1 mandatory "Why Duke" essay (250 words): it must demonstrate specific knowledge of Duke's programs, professors and initiatives. Plus 2 optional essays about identity / community (250 words each). For Pratt: an additional essay about engineering.

5

3 recommendations (counselor + 2 teachers)

A counselor recommendation plus 2 teachers from your core academic subjects. For Pratt: at least one from a math or physics teacher is mandatory. Duke reads recommendations closely: it looks for clues about genuine intellectual curiosity.

6

Alumni interview (optional)

Duke offers optional interviews through the Duke Alumni Admissions Advisory Committee (AAAC). For Romanians, there is a limited network in Bucharest. It is not a deciding factor, but it provides additional context, especially to show off your English and your personality.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Duke and the Ivies for a Romanian?

Duke is the most prestigious Southern university in the USA: it combines Ivy academic rigor with a more relaxed atmosphere and intense sports. Less pre-professional than Penn, more sports-oriented than any Ivy, with a "southern hospitality" feel. For pre-med, pre-law and public policy: Duke is comparable to most Ivies. For biotech research and medicine, thanks to Duke Hospital plus the Research Triangle: Duke is one of the best destinations. The weather: warm and mild (vs the long winter in New England). For Romanians who love sports (basketball in particular), a strong community atmosphere and medical research: Duke is an excellent choice.

Trinity vs Pratt: how do I choose between Duke's 2 schools?

Duke has 2 undergraduate schools with different admissions and character. Trinity College of Arts and Sciences (~5,500 students): liberal arts with more than 50 majors, Economics, Computer Science, Biology, Public Policy etc. That is where pre-med, pre-law, humanities and social sciences students go, plus many who want to do CS or math. The Pratt School of Engineering (~1,300 students): 4 departments, Biomedical Engineering (top USA), Civil and Environmental, Electrical and Computer, Mechanical and Materials. Pratt is smaller and more collaborative. Switching after admission: Trinity to Pratt is difficult (math requirements), Pratt to Trinity is easy. Choose Pratt only if you are sure about engineering.

What is Duke like for pre-med?

Duke is one of the best universities in the USA for pre-med. Advantages: Duke Medical School (#3 USA) is directly connected to the undergraduate program: students do shadowing, research and volunteering. Duke Hospital is among the top 10 hospitals in the USA, with direct access to clinical experience. The medical school admission rate for Duke applicants: ~85% (vs the national average of 40%). Rigorous pre-med courses: Bio 201/202, Chem 99/100, Organic Chem, Physics. Many special pre-med programs: Bass Connections, DukeImmerse. For Romanians interested in medicine in the USA: Duke is a top pre-med destination.

Duke ED binding: how does it work?

Duke uses binding Early Decision. Binding means that if it admits you in ED, you must accept and withdraw your other applications. Exception: insufficient financial aid. ED deadline: November 1, decision December 15. ED rate Class of 2029: 12.8% (849 admitted out of 6,627 applicants), RD record low 3.67%: the significant gap makes ED strategically very advantageous if you are sure about Duke. For Romanians, Duke ED can be optimal for someone clearly passionate about Duke (interest in pre-med, basketball culture, the Research Triangle). Note: Duke does not allow simultaneous applications to other ED, REA or SCEA programs.

How does Duke Financial Aid work for Romanians?

Important: Duke is need-blind for US citizens and eligible noncitizens, but need-aware for internationals: the financial circumstances of internationals are taken into account at admission. But for internationals admitted with aid: Duke covers 100% of demonstrated need, with no loans. Total Duke aid: $149 million per year. 51% of students receive aid, 21% pay $0 in tuition. Packages include tuition, housing, meals, books. Plus the Robertson Scholars and the Nakayama Scholarship (merit, separate application). Critical: you apply for aid when you submit; if you do not, you can never request it again in the 4 years.

SAT/ACT at Duke: required or optional?

Duke is test-optional for 2025-26 and 2026-27. The policy is "no-disadvantage": you are not penalized if you do not submit. If you choose to submit, the score is evaluated as part of the application. Admitted Duke profiles: SAT 1490-1560, ACT 34-35. For Romanians: if your SAT is 1500+ or ACT is 34+, it is recommended to submit. Duke code for the College Board: 5156. Duke has announced that it will reassess the policy for the Class of 2031 (fall 2027 entry), but for current applicants and the next cycle: optional.

What is the Robertson Scholars program?

The Robertson Scholars Leadership Program is one of the most prestigious merit scholarships in the USA. Offered in partnership between Duke and UNC Chapel Hill. It covers tuition, housing, meals and books in full for 4 years, plus 3 funded summer experiences (community building, global exploration, leadership). Approximately 15-20 Duke students per year receive Robertson. The application is separate from the regular Duke application: you must complete an additional Robertson application. Extremely competitive selection: demonstrated leadership, community impact, an exceptional academic profile. For Romanian olympians with real leadership: it is worth trying. Note: the Reginaldo Howard Memorial Scholarship was discontinued in April 2024 following the SCOTUS decision on race-based admissions.

How many Romanian students are at Duke?

Duke admits on average 2-4 Romanian students per year at the undergraduate level. The number has been relatively stable in recent years. At the graduate level (PhD, Fuqua MBA, Medical School), the number is higher: 8-12 per year. The total active Romanian community (undergrad plus grad plus recent alumni): 40-60 people.
