About the University of Leeds
The University of Leeds was founded in 1904 by royal charter, with 19th-century origins: Leeds School of Medicine (1831) plus the Yorkshire College of Science (1874). In 2026 it turns 122. Location: Leeds, West Yorkshire, the 3rd largest UK city (after London and Birmingham) and the economic and cultural centre of the Yorkshire region. It is one of the classic red brick universities and a founding member of the Russell Group.
What makes Leeds unique: it is the 3rd or 4th largest UK university with over 37,000 students, of whom more than 14,400 are international from 150 plus countries.
