About Università Bocconi

Università Bocconi is a private university founded in 1902 in Milan, Italy's economic and financial capital. It was the first university in Italy to award a degree in economics and remains number 1 in the country for economics, business, finance and management. The name comes from Ferdinando Bocconi, the entrepreneur who funded its founding in memory of his son Luigi.

On the QS World University Rankings by Subject, Bocconi sits in the global top 20 for Economics & Econometrics and among the world's leading positions for Business & Management and Accounting & Finance. The Financial Times consistently places it in the world top 10 for management programs, and SDA Bocconi (the business school) ranks among the top spots for MBA and executive education in Europe. For a Romanian student interested in finance, consulting or management, Bocconi is one of the strongest launchpads in continental Europe.

Bocconi has around 15,200 students, of whom over 6,000 are international, from 100 plus countries. Unlike Italy's public universities, Bocconi has a modern, compact campus in central Milan, with buildings designed by architects such as Grafton Architects (Pritzker Prize winners) and an academic environment strongly connected to the corporate world. Recruiters from major investment banks, consulting firms and tech companies come directly to campus.

The best-known bachelor's programs in English (3 years, Bologna system) include: BIEF (International Economics and Finance), BIEM (International Economics and Management), BEMACS (Economics, Management and Computer Science), BAI (Artificial Intelligence), BIG (International Politics and Government), the World Bachelor in Business (WBB) (a joint program with USC and HKUST) and programs in Economic and Social Sciences or Mathematical and Computing Sciences. Important for Romanians: Bocconi is private, so tuition is around EUR 16,000 per year (similar to a non-EU student, without statutory public EU fees), BUT it offers very generous merit-based scholarships that can cover anywhere from 30% up to 100% of tuition, sometimes plus free housing.

How to apply to Bocconi

1

Apply directly online (yourBocconi)

Bocconi does not use a centralized platform like UCAS. You apply directly on the yourBocconi portal, create an account, choose up to 3 bachelor's programs in order of preference and complete your academic details. The application fee is in the region of a few dozen euros. The most important tip: apply as early as possible.

2

Admission test: Bocconi Test OR SAT/ACT

You need to have a score before applying. You have two paths: the Bocconi's own test (online, logic, mathematics, verbal comprehension in English; aim for 35 plus out of 50) OR an SAT score (1400 plus is competitive, 1500 plus is very strong) or ACT. SAT/ACT are accepted as an alternative, not mandatory.

3

High school grades, essays and CV

The assessment combines your test score (~55%) with your grade average from grades 10 and 11 (~45%). You prepare your transcript (translated academic record), a motivational essay, a CV with extracurricular activities and, where applicable, proof of English (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge). The Romanian Baccalaureate or the IB diploma are recognized as a qualifying diploma.

4

Decision by rounds (Early, Winter, Spring)

Bocconi admits in 3 rounds. The Early round (autumn) has the most places and the most scholarships, followed by Winter and Spring, each with progressively fewer places. Around 95% of places are allocated in the first two rounds. The decision comes a few weeks after each deadline.

5

Merit-based scholarship offer

All applicants are automatically evaluated for merit scholarships, with no separate application. If you are admitted with strong results, you may receive a Merit Award (partial or full tuition waiver, up to 100%), and a limited number of students also receive free housing in Bocconi residences. Separate need-based scholarships require income documents (similar to ISEE/ISEE Parificato).

6

Enrollment and moving to Milan

After acceptance you confirm your place, pay the first tuition installment (or receive the waiver), arrange housing (Bocconi residences or an apartment) and, as an EU citizen, register in Italy without a visa. The academic year begins in September. Recommendation: sort out housing early, as Milan has a competitive rental market.

Costs and scholarships for Romanians

Tuition and fees 2026-27 (top band)

Tuition + fees year 1 (top band)~EUR 16,000-EUR 17,000
Application fee~EUR 50-EUR 100

Student public transport~EUR 22-EUR 35/month
Total cost of living/year~EUR 11,000-EUR 16,000
Key point for Romanians: Bocconi is a private university, so tuition is around EUR 16,000 per year (top band), similar to what a non-EU student pays and without statutory public EU fees of the guaranteed ISEE type. Do NOT expect automatically low tuition as at a state university. BUT Bocconi offers very generous merit-based scholarships, which can cover anywhere from 30% up to 100% of tuition, and in a limited number of cases additional costs such as housing too. With a strong academic profile and an application in the Early round, a Romanian student can end up paying well below the advertised top band.
Partial Merit Award

30-50% tuition

A partial tuition waiver granted automatically based on academic results and test score, with no separate application. It reduces the annual bill by several thousand euros. The earlier you apply (Early round) and the stronger your profile, the higher the likelihood of a larger scholarship.

Full Merit Award

Up to 100% tuition

The most competitive profiles can receive a full tuition waiver (full Merit Award, with the waiver worth around EUR 12,000 per year), and a limited number of recipients also receive free housing in a Bocconi residence. It covers the core of the academic cost for all three years, conditional on maintaining performance.

Bocconi4Access + need-based

Income-based scholarships

Through the Bocconi4Access to Education scheme, international students from lower-income families can receive 100% waivers of tuition and fees in year 1, plus other forms of support. These need-based scholarships require income documents (ISEE Parificato for EU citizens) and stack with the merit logic. You apply alongside admission.

How does admission work: Bocconi Test or SAT?

You need to have a test score before applying. SAT and ACT are accepted as an alternative, they are not mandatory. Test preparation and the application should be started a few months before the first deadline, usually around September for the Early round.

Is the Romanian Baccalaureate accepted at Bocconi?

Yes. The Romanian Baccalaureate is recognized as a qualifying diploma, just like the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma or other equivalent high school diplomas. Bocconi looks at the grade average from grades 10 and 11 (these weigh ~45% in the decision), plus the admission test score (~55%). You will submit your officially translated academic record and, in the end, the Baccalaureate diploma. The ideal profile for competitive programs: consistently high grades in mathematics and relevant subjects, plus a solid score on the Bocconi Test or SAT.

Do I need to know Italian to study at Bocconi?

For the English-taught programs (BIEF, BIEM, BEMACS, BAI and the others), you do not need Italian to be admitted or to follow the courses. The language of instruction is English, and the campus has a large international community (over 6,000 students from 100 plus countries). You will need proof of English proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge), if you have not already studied in English. Italian helps enormously in everyday life in Milan and for internships at local companies, and Bocconi offers Italian courses for beginners. For integration and the Italian job market, we recommend learning it as you go.

What career opportunities does a Bocconi graduate have?

Bocconi has one of the strongest placement networks in continental Europe for finance, consulting and management. Recruiters from investment banks (Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley), consulting firms (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) and tech companies come directly to campus. The placement rate of the management programs is very high, and many bachelor's graduates go on to a master's at Bocconi or at other strong universities in Europe and the US. As an EU citizen, a Romanian graduate can work in Italy or anywhere in the EU without a visa. Milan is Italy's financial and corporate hub, with the headquarters of banks, funds, fashion houses and technology firms.
