New York University
In the heart of Manhattan, Greenwich Village, Washington Square Park. Tisch is world #1 for film, theater and the arts. Stern is an elite BSB straight from high school. A Global Network University with its own campuses in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai plus 12 study away centers. NYU Promise (from 2024-25): meets 100% of need for all admitted international students with aid, but it is need-aware for admission.

About New York University
New York University (NYU) is located in Greenwich Village, one of the most prestigious and vibrant neighborhoods in Manhattan. It does NOT have a traditional campus with fences and gardens, instead, NYU is integrated into New York City, with buildings spread around Washington Square Park (the psychological center of the university). The Tandon School of Engineering is in Brooklyn (DUMBO). Founded in 1831 by Albert Gallatin (the former Secretary of the Treasury under Jefferson), NYU was the first university founded with the explicit mission of being non-religiously affiliated and open to all, in contrast to Columbia (Anglican) or Harvard (Puritan).
NYU has 10 plus undergraduate schools, each with separate admission and a distinct identity. The main ones: College of Arts and Science (CAS), the largest school, 50 plus majors in humanities, sciences, social sciences; Stern School of Business, BSB straight from high school, top 5 in the USA for undergraduate business, with a strong focus on finance plus global business; Tisch School of the Arts, world #1 for film and theater, programs in Film & TV, Drama, Dance, Photography, Game Design, Recorded Music, Cinema Studies (Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, Lady Gaga are alumni); Tandon School of Engineering (Brooklyn campus), CS, Aerospace, Biomedical, Civil, Mechanical; Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, Applied Psychology, Music Business, Communicative Sciences, Media Cultures; Gallatin School of Individualized Study, unique in the world, you build your own interdisciplinary major; Rory Meyers College of Nursing; Liberal Studies, the first 2 years at NYU plus global studies, then you transfer to CAS or another school.
Unique NYU features: (1) Global Network University, NYC plus Abu Dhabi plus Shanghai are 3 "portal campuses" (complete campuses with their own degrees) plus 12 "study away" centers (Berlin, Buenos Aires, Florence, London, Madrid, Paris, Prague, Sydney, Tel Aviv, Tirana, Washington DC, Accra). Many NYU students spend 1-2 semesters at one of these global campuses; (2) The largest international population in the USA, ~26% international undergrads (Class of 2028, the most recent complete figure), over 130 countries; (3) NYU Promise (launched 2024-25): meets 100% of need for ALL undergrads admitted at NYC, regardless of citizenship, plus families with equivalent income under $100k = $0 tuition; (4) The Manhattan atmosphere, no traditional campus, means total immersion in NYC; huge internships (Wall Street, media, the arts). Mascot: Bobcat. Conference: UAA D3 (NYU is NOT a sports school). Colors: NYU Violet.
How to apply to NYU
Common App plus choosing the school and campus
NYU accepts only the Common Application. Application fee: $80. When submitting you choose (1) the school, CAS, Stern, Tisch, Tandon, Steinhardt, Gallatin, Nursing, Liberal Studies; (2) the campus, New York, Abu Dhabi or Shanghai. Critical: you can apply simultaneously to 3 choices of school or campus on the same application. This significantly increases your chances, but you must show authentic fit for each one. Note: applying to Abu Dhabi or Shanghai is separate from NYU NYC (different campus, different financial aid).
3 options: ED1, ED2, RD
Early Decision I: binding, deadline ~November 1, decision ~December 15, commit January. Early Decision II: binding, deadline ~January 1, decision ~mid February, commit ~March. Regular Decision: non-binding, deadline ~January 5, decision ~April 1, commit May 1. Estimated ED1 rate under 25%, RD ~5-7%. ED gives a significant boost. Strategy for Romanians: ED1 with NYU if it is clearly your first choice and you have the financial plan; ED2 if another university rejects you in ED1; RD for flexibility.
Test-optional confirmed plus TOEFL/IELTS
NYU is test-optional confirmed for the 2026-27 cycle. Only 28% of admitted students submitted the SAT, 10% the ACT. Admitted profiles Class of 2029 (those who submitted): SAT 1480-1550 (median 1520), ACT 34-35. For Stern and Tisch: top quarter, SAT 1530 plus, ACT 35. For Romanians: submit the SAT if the score is good (1450 plus); otherwise do not submit. TOEFL 100 plus (iBT), IELTS 7.5 plus or Duolingo 125 plus. NYU code: 2562. Also, NYU accepts AP Exam 5 or IB HL 6 plus as proof of English proficiency.
Common App essays plus NYU supplement
Common App Personal Statement (650 words) plus the NYU supplement: 1 mandatory essay of ~250 words about "why NYU and why this school or program". Critical for Romanians: at NYU, the "Why NYU" essay must address the specific school chosen (Stern vs Tisch vs CAS, each has very different vibes). Also, if you apply to Tisch: a mandatory artistic review (an audition for Drama or Dance, a portfolio for Photography or Film or Game Design, a demo reel for Recorded Music) with separate deadlines.
Tisch: audition or portfolio required
To apply to the Tisch School of the Arts: mandatory additional materials, separate from the main application. Drama: a video monologue (2 min) plus a scheduled interview. Dance: a technical video plus a live or virtual audition. Film & TV: 1 short film (or other creative visual material) plus a script. Photography & Imaging: a portfolio of 20 images. Game Design: a portfolio of games or prototypes. Recorded Music: 3 audio recordings. Cinema Studies: no portfolio required, it is an academic program, not performance. Tisch materials deadline: usually coincides with the application deadline (November 1 for ED1).
Financial aid: only the CSS Profile for intl
For aid: the CSS Profile is mandatory (deadline November 10 for ED1, January 10 ED2, February 1 RD). FAFSA does NOT apply to international students, intl are ineligible for Federal Aid. NYU is need-aware for international students, applying for aid lowers your chances of admission. But if you are admitted with aid: NYU Promise meets 100% of need plus families with equivalent income under $100k = $0 tuition (applicable to intl). Strategy for Romanians: if you can avoid it, do not apply for aid (you maximize your chances). If you need it, apply, but prepare a backup at need-blind universities. Use the NYU Net Price Calculator before you decide.
Costs for Romanians
Sticker cost (academic year 2025-26)
Total cost for 4 years (intl)
with impact
NYU is need-aware for intl. The aid request impacts the admission decision: a significantly lower rate for applicants who request aid vs those who do not. The more you request, the stronger your profile must be.
100% need met
For admitted intl with aid: 100% of demonstrated need covered. Also, if equivalent family income is under $100k (launched 2024-25): $0 tuition guaranteed. NYU Promise explicitly applies to international students as well.
first-year only
The decision to request aid must be made in year 1. Applying through the CSS Profile is mandatory (NOT FAFSA, it does not apply to intl). Strategy: if family income is under $100k, apply (NYU Promise = $0 tuition). If above, the calculation is more complex.
Do you want to apply to NYU?
NYU is a complex university: 10 plus schools, 3 portal campuses (NYC, Abu Dhabi, Shanghai), Tisch world #1 for the arts, Stern direct admission business. Also, NYU Promise is new and changes the financial calculation for Romanians. Talk to a mentorFrequently asked questions
NYU vs other top non-Ivy, when does it make sense for a Romanian?
NYU makes sense if: (1) You want the arts, Tisch is world #1 for film, theater, dance, photography; you want double access undergrad plus Hollywood (LA studio internships plus NYC theater); (2) You want finance or international business, Stern is among the top 5 BSB in the USA, in Manhattan equals direct access to Wall Street; (3) You want Manhattan immersion, no traditional campus means intense urban life, abundant internships, massive networking; (4) You want integrated global experience, a Global Network University with Abu Dhabi, Shanghai, Berlin, London as portal campuses, more flexible than study abroad at other universities; (5) Your family has equivalent income under $100k, NYU Promise equals $0 tuition (applicable to intl). NYU does NOT make sense if: you want traditional college life (a fenced campus, a sports atmosphere); you want pure tech or CS (MIT, CMU, Berkeley are better); you want a quieter environment (NYC is overwhelming); you apply with aid and family income is $100k-$300k (NYU need-aware equals lowered chances).
Tisch School of the Arts, how do you apply and how competitive is it?
Tisch is world #1 for film and theater, alongside the USC School of Cinematic Arts and UCLA TFT. Alumni: Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, Lady Gaga (she dropped out in year 2), Adam Sandler, Whoopi Goldberg, Joaquin Phoenix, Anne Hathaway, Olivia Wilde. Programs: Film & TV (the most popular), Drama (training for professional acting), Dance, Photography & Imaging, Game Design (top 3 in the USA), Cinema Studies (academic, not performance), Recorded Music, Performance Studies. Tisch overall acceptance rate: ~16%, but it varies per program: Drama ~3-5% (extreme), Film & TV ~12-15%, Game Design ~15%. For Romanians: mandatory additional materials (audition, portfolio, demo reel) with a deadline coinciding with the main application. Building strong materials: at least 2-3 years of serious preparation.
Stern Business undergrad, direct admission?
Yes, BSB straight from high school. NYU Stern is among the top 5 BSB programs in the USA alongside UPenn Wharton, MIT Sloan undergrad, UVA McIntire, Berkeley Haas M.E.T. The Manhattan location equals the best access to Wall Street for internships (Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, etc. have their headquarters 10-15 minutes from campus). Stern BSB programs: general Business (with multiple concentrations, Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Management), Business and Political Economy, Business, Technology and Entrepreneurship (BTE), plus the Stern plus Tisch dual degree option (rare but available). Stern acceptance rate Class of 2029: under 5% (together with CAS and Nursing), among the most selective undergraduate programs in the USA. For Romanians: applying to Stern requires a clear business profile (financial internships, business clubs, investment competitions, etc.). Also, a Stern-specific supplement: the "Why Stern" essay, generic answers fall immediately.
NYU Promise, how does it work for Romanian international students?
Major change from 2024-25. Under president Linda G. Mills, NYU launched NYU Promise, the guarantee that ALL undergrads (including international students) admitted as first-years at the NYC campus will have 100% of demonstrated need covered. Also, families with equivalent income under $100k and typical assets equal $0 tuition. Officially confirmed by NYU for the Class of 2029: "Families with incomes of less than $100,000 will not have to pay tuition" applicable to domestic and international first-year students. For Romanians: if equivalent family income is under $100k (~450k RON), the tuition of ~$63k per year is fully covered. This is an enormous opportunity vs how NYU used to be (famous for low aid). CATCH: NYU is need-aware for international students, applying for aid lowers your chances of admission. The practical strategy: if equivalent family income is under $100k, applying for aid is clearly the right option (it lowers your chances but if admitted equals $0 tuition). If income is between $100k-$200k, the calculation is more complex. If income is over $300k, do not apply for aid, maximize your chances.
Need-aware for international students, what does it concretely mean?
A critical distinction for Romanians. Need-blind global (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Dartmouth, Georgetown): applying for aid does NOT lower your chances of admission. Need-aware for intl (NYU, Stanford, Columbia, UPenn, Cornell, Brown, Northwestern, JHU, Vanderbilt, Rice, CMU, Michigan): applying for aid can lower your chances of admission, because NYU has to look at how much aid an applicant would request. The practical reality at NYU: the admission rate for applicants who do not request aid is significantly higher than for those who do (the more you request, the lower your chances fall). Strategy for Romanians: if you can pay the full $87k per year, do NOT apply for aid, you maximize your chances. If you need aid, apply (need-aware does not mean impossible), but prepare yourself with parallel applications to need-blind universities (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Dartmouth, Georgetown) as a backup.
Global Network University (NYC plus Abu Dhabi plus Shanghai), how does it work?
NYU is the only university with 3 distinct "portal campuses": NYU New York (the main campus), NYU Abu Dhabi (UAE, launched 2010), NYU Shanghai (China, launched 2013). Plus, 12 study away centers: Berlin, Buenos Aires, Florence, London, Madrid, Paris, Prague, Sydney, Tel Aviv, Tirana, Washington DC, Accra. How it works: when you apply, you choose a specific campus, each has separate admission. NYU Abu Dhabi has an admission rate of ~4% (the most selective NYU campus), but it is need-blind global plus meets 100% of need (including for international students), practically free for admitted intl with aid. NYU Shanghai is similar, selective, multicultural. Also, NYU NYC students can spend 1-2 semesters at any of the 14 locations. For Romanians interested in Abu Dhabi: separate application, a hyper-international environment, full-need met, minimal payment for Romanians with low or medium incomes.
How do I choose among NYU's 10 plus undergraduate schools?
The critical decision for NYU. College of Arts and Science (CAS), the largest, flexible; ideal for pre-med, humanities, sciences, or if you are not 100% sure (you declare a major in year 2). Stern, clearly for business, a finance focus, very selective. Tisch, for performing arts (Film, Drama, Dance, etc.); portfolio required. Tandon (Brooklyn campus), for Engineering and CS; more accessible than CS in CAS. Steinhardt, Applied Psychology, Music Business, Education, Media; good for creative plus academic careers. Gallatin, unique in the world, design-your-own-major; for students with clear interdisciplinary interests (e.g. combining neurology plus philosophy plus technology). Less selective than Stern or Tisch but it requires a strong proposal. Liberal Studies, the first 2 years in NYC or global, then you transfer to another school. Strategy for Romanians: choose the school that aligns with your authentic profile plus the "Why this school" supplement requires specificity.
How many Romanian students are at NYU?
NYU has ~26% international students at the undergraduate level (Class of 2028 official figure), approximately 7,800 intl students, the largest intl population among USA universities. For Romanians: we estimate 40-80 Romanian students at the undergraduate level across all 4 years combined, more than most top non-Ivy universities (Michigan: 15-30, Berkeley: 10-30, Rice: 10-15). NYU is one of the most popular top non-Ivy universities among Romanians oriented toward: arts and film (Tisch), business and finance (Stern), pre-med and sciences (CAS), technology (Tandon). At the graduate level (MBA Stern, Tisch Drama, Tisch Film, Wagner MPA), the Romanian community is larger, 80-150 people. NYC advantage for Romanians: the Romanian community in New York is one of the largest in the USA, over 30,000 Romanians live in the NYC area (Queens, Brooklyn, Long Island), restaurants, an Orthodox church, frequent community events. Also, NYC is the global cultural hub, unlimited networking.
