University of Michigan
The best non-California public university in the USA. Founded in 1817, in Ann Arbor, consistently the best college town in America. Founding member of the Big Ten since 1896 (The Big House, the largest college stadium in the USA, 107,601 seats). Unlike UC: Common App, new binding Early Decision for 2026, test-optional (NOT test-blind), very limited aid for internationals.

About University of Michigan
University of Michigan is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, a college town of 125,000 residents, consistently ranked number 1 college town in the USA (Niche, Forbes). It is 45 minutes from Detroit, 4 hours from Chicago, 1 hour from Toronto. The Central plus North plus Athletic Campus covers 1,300 hectares and includes The Big House, Michigan Stadium, the largest college stadium in the USA with 107,601 seats. Founded in 1817 (20 years before Michigan became a state), it is among the oldest public universities in the USA and a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), an elite group of 70 research universities.
Michigan has 9 undergraduate colleges/schools with separate admissions: College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA), the largest, ~60% of students, over 100 majors; College of Engineering, top 10 in the USA, Aerospace, Biomedical, Computer Science, Mechanical, Robotics; Ross School of Business, BBA straight from high school (rare at elite schools!), very selective for internationals; Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design; Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning; School of Music, Theatre and Dance, mandatory audition, RD deadline December 1 (earlier than the others!); School of Kinesiology; School of Nursing; School of Education. Plus, dual programs such as BBA plus LSA or Engineering plus Ross (M-Eng/BBA dual degree).
Unique Michigan features vs the UC system: (1) Common App (NOT the UC App), the same system as all elite private universities; (2) Test-optional (NOT test-blind), the SAT/ACT can be submitted and taken into account; (3) NEW for the 2025-26 cycle (Class of 2030): binding Early Decision, the first time in Michigan's history, in addition to the existing non-binding Early Action; (4) Need-blind for admission, but aid for internationals is very limited, NOT guaranteed 100% need met. The Wolverine brand is legendary: alumni at 4 plus Olympic Games, 12 NCAA football championships, 7 NCAA basketball championships, fight song "Hail to the Victors" known throughout the USA. Notable alumni: Larry Page (co-founder of Google), Tom Brady (the best NFL QB of all time), Gerald Ford (the 38th President of the USA), James Earl Jones, Lucy Liu.
How to apply to University of Michigan
Common App, choosing the school
Michigan accepts only the Common Application. Application fee: $75 (waiver available). When you apply you choose one of the 9 undergraduate schools/colleges. Critical: for Ross (Business), Engineering, Stamps Art and Design, admission is separate and more selective. For Music, Theatre and Dance, mandatory audition plus RD deadline December 1 (not February 1!). Switching between schools later is possible, but for Ross and Engineering it requires a formal transfer application.
3 options: ED (NEW), EA, RD
Early Decision (NEW for the Class of 2030, the 2025-26 cycle): binding, deadline Nov 1, decision Dec 24, commit Jan 6. Early Action: non-binding, deadline Nov 1, decision ~Jan 25, commit May 1. Regular Decision: non-binding, deadline Feb 1, decision ~Apr 1, commit May 1. NEW Strategy: if Michigan is clearly your first choice and your financial plan is ready, ED gives the biggest boost. But beware: Michigan defers 25-30% of EA applicants to RD, which is not a rejection, but "more time for us to decide".
Test-optional (NOT test-blind)
Michigan is test-optional for 2025-26, different from UC Berkeley/UCLA which are test-blind. For Romanians: submit SAT/ACT if the score is good. Admitted profiles: SAT 1430-1530 (median 1480), ACT 32-34 (median 33). For Ross and Engineering: SAT 1500 plus / ACT 34 plus recommended. TOEFL 100 plus, IELTS 7.0 plus or MET mandatory for Romanians. Michigan College Board code: 1839.
Supplemental essays (2 mandatory)
Michigan requires 2 supplemental essays (NEW for 2025-26): (1) Leadership and Contribution (100-300 words), how you will contribute to Michigan's mission of shaping leaders and citizens; (2) "Why Michigan" (100-550 words), the unique qualities of the chosen school/college. "Why Michigan" is crucial and one of the longest in the USA, generic answers fail immediately. Mention specific courses, professors, programs, labs.
Recommendations (1-2 teachers)
Counselor recommendation plus 1 letter from a core academic teacher is mandatory. For Engineering and Ross: a second letter is strongly recommended, ideally from a STEM or business teacher. School Report (from the counselor or class teacher) is mandatory. For Romanians: ask for recommendations from teachers in grades 11-12 who taught you core subjects and can speak specifically about intellectual curiosity, leadership and impact.
Financial aid: CSS Profile plus FAFSA
For aid: complete the CSS Profile plus FAFSA. Deadlines: November 15 for ED (financial aid package decision together with admission); February for EA/RD. Michigan is need-blind for admission (applying for aid does NOT affect your chances). For internationals: aid is very limited, Michigan officially states: "U-M schools and colleges have very limited funding for undergraduate international students". Use the U-M Net Price Calculator before applying.
Costs and scholarships, different from the UC system
2025-26 list cost (out-of-state)
Total cost for 4 years (without aid)
Very limited
U-M officially states: "U-M schools and colleges have very limited funding for undergraduate international students". NOT 100% need met guaranteed (vs Vanderbilt, Northwestern). Federal/state aid: NOT eligible.
Competitive
Departmental scholarships: LSA Honors, Engineering scholarships, Ross BBA Awards, Stamps Scholars Program (full ride for ~25 students/year, extremely competitive). Some are not restricted by citizenship.
$0 tuition
Only for Michigan residents with income under $125k and assets under $125k equals free tuition. Does NOT apply to internationals.

Talk to a mentorFrequently asked questions
Michigan vs UC Berkeley vs UCLA, which is better for a Romanian?
Fundamental differences. Application system: Michigan equals Common App (same as the Ivies), UC equals UC Application (separate). Test policy: Michigan equals test-optional (the SAT can help), UC equals test-blind (the SAT is ignored). Aid for internationals: Michigan offers very limited aid (but non-zero), UC offers $0. Acceptance rate: Michigan 16.42% Class of 2029 (more accessible), Berkeley 11.4%, UCLA 9.4%. Global brand: the UCs have a stronger international brand (especially in Asia); Michigan has a strong brand in America and Europe. Location: Ann Arbor equals a small college town, perfect for academic focus plus Big Ten tradition. Berkeley/UCLA equals California, lifestyle, tech or entertainment networking. Strengths: Michigan equals Engineering, Ross BBA (direct admission!), Medicine, athletics. Berkeley equals CS/EECS, Engineering, Chemistry. UCLA equals Film, Psychology, Pre-med. For Romanians: if you want Big Ten plus direct business undergrad plus a reasonable cost of living plus possible aid equals Michigan. If you want California plus the tech industry equals Berkeley or UCLA.
How do I choose among the 9 Michigan undergraduate schools?
Each school has separate admissions. LSA (Literature, Science, and the Arts), ~60% of students, 100 plus majors (Economics, Psychology, Political Science, English, Math, Biology), the most flexible; ideal for pre-med, pre-law or if you are not 100% sure. College of Engineering, top 10 in the USA, you enter directly into a specialty (CS, Aerospace, Bio, Mechanical, Robotics); high competition for CS. Ross School of Business, BBA straight from high school (enormous advantage!), ~5-8% admit rate; the most selective of all Michigan schools. Stamps Art and Design, mandatory portfolio. Taubman Architecture, optional portfolio. Music, Theatre and Dance, mandatory audition, deadline Dec 1. Kinesiology, Nursing, Education, smaller, very specific. Strategy for Romanians: if you want business, apply to Ross directly (rare opportunity!). For tech, Engineering CS. For flexibility, LSA. Caution: switching from LSA to Ross is very hard, choose carefully from the start.
Ross School of Business, is direct application worth it?
Yes, if business is clearly your top goal. Ross is among the top 5 BBA programs in the USA (top 3 together with UPenn Wharton and Berkeley Haas M.E.T.). Enormous advantage vs Haas: at Berkeley Haas, Spieker Undergrad requires applying in year 2 (after you are already at Berkeley), at Michigan Ross, you apply straight from high school. Ross BBA programs: general BBA, BBA plus LSA dual (3 years business plus 1 year liberal arts), BBA plus Engineering (5-year M-Eng/BBA dual). Ross acceptance rate: ~5-8%, among the most selective undergraduate programs in the USA. For Romanians: apply to Ross only if you have a consistent business profile (interest demonstrated through internships, business plans, business clubs or competitions). Plus, the "Why Ross" supplement is crucial, Ross looks for Ross-specific character (action-based learning, MAP, Multidisciplinary Action Projects).
New ED for 2026, what is the strategy?
Michigan is introducing binding Early Decision for the first time in its history for the 2025-26 cycle (Class of 2030). Deadline Nov 1, decision Dec 24, commit Jan 6. ED advantages: the highest statistical chances of admission (estimated 30-40% for qualified applicants vs 16.4% overall), an early decision plus your financial plan finalized in December. Disadvantages: binding (you must withdraw all other applications), you CANNOT compare financial aid packages with other universities. Strategy for Romanians: apply ED only if (1) Michigan is clearly your first choice, (2) your financial plan is ready or the aid offered is sufficient. Alternative: Early Action, non-binding, deadline also Nov 1, decision ~Jan 25. EA gives an early decision without a binding commitment. For uncertain Romanians, EA is the safe path. Caution: Michigan defers 25-30% of EA to RD for re-evaluation.
"Why Michigan" essay 550 words, how do I build it?
Why Michigan is among the longest "why us" essays in the USA, 100-550 words, vs 200-300 at most universities. The length means an obligation to be specific and detailed. The prompt: "Describe the unique qualities that attract you to the specific undergraduate College or School to which you are applying at the University of Michigan. How would that curriculum support your interests?" Strategies for Romanians: (1) Mention concrete courses (e.g.: ECON 401 Topics in Microeconomics, EECS 281 Data Structures); (2) Name specific professors whose fields interest you; (3) Reference labs, programs, resources specific to the school (e.g.: Center for Entrepreneurship at Ross, ELI lab at Engineering); (4) Connect directly to your past experiences plus future goals. Avoid: generalities about prestige, location, ranking, Wolverines spirit. Generic answers fail immediately.
Test-optional at Michigan, submit the SAT or not?
Michigan is test-optional (NOT test-blind like UC) for 2025-26, meaning you can submit the SAT/ACT and it will be taken into account. Rule for Romanians: submit if the score is good, hide it if it is weak. Thresholds: SAT 1450 plus, submit. SAT 1350-1450, judged based on the rest of the application and the selected school (for Ross/Engineering submittable only at 1500 plus). SAT below 1350, do not submit. For the ACT: 32 plus submittable, below 30 no. Real admitted profiles 2024: SAT 1430-1530 (median 1480), ACT 32-34 (median 33). For Ross and Engineering, the top 25% of admits (SAT 1530 plus, ACT 35 plus). Important: if you submit, the Michigan code is 1839, send it through College Board or ACT directly.
Financial aid at Michigan for Romanians, is there anything real?
Yes, there is, but very limited. Unlike UC Berkeley/UCLA which explicitly declare zero aid for internationals, Michigan offers limited aid plus merit-based scholarships, but U-M officially states: "U-M schools and colleges have very limited funding for undergraduate international students". The critical reality: Michigan is need-blind for admission (applying for aid does not lower your chances), but it does NOT guarantee 100% of demonstrated need for internationals (vs Vanderbilt or Northwestern which do guarantee it). Federal/state aid for F-1/J-1 visa holders: NOT eligible. Real packages for internationals: variable, from zero to modest, rarely above $20-25k/year. Specific merit scholarships: Stamps Scholars Program (~25 full-ride scholarships/year, extremely competitive), LSA Honors Scholarships, Engineering scholarships. Strategy for Romanians: apply for aid through CSS Profile plus FAFSA by the deadlines (Nov 15 for ED, February for EA/RD). Use the U-M Net Price Calculator before applying.
How many Romanian students are at Michigan?
University of Michigan has ~9% international students at the undergraduate level (~3,000 students), most from Asia (China, India). For Romanians: we estimate 15-30 Romanian students at the undergraduate level across all 4 years combined. At the graduate level (Ross MBA, Engineering PhD, Medical), the number is higher, 30-60 people. The total active community: 50-90 people. Michigan is popular among Romanians oriented toward: Ross BBA (because of direct admission from high school, rare at elite schools), Engineering (top 10 in the USA), Medicine pre-med (LSA), PhD in sciences. The Romanian Student Association at UMich is active, organizes events, helps with networking. A specific Ann Arbor advantage for Romanians: an active Romanian community in Michigan (the Detroit metro area has ~10,000 Romanians), a short distance (~45 min) between Ann Arbor and Detroit. A reasonable cost of living plus midwestern culture (friendlier than NYC or LA) eases the transition for Romanians.
