HEC Paris
A Grande École de business founded in 1881, ranked number 1 in Europe in the Financial Times "European Business Schools" ranking. Its flagship program, Grande École (Master in Management), is ranked number 2 worldwide by the FT. Note: HEC has no classic post-bac bachelor of its own. For a high-school graduate, the direct route is the BA double degree with Bocconi, while the Grande École program is accessed after a 3-year bachelor.

About HEC Paris
HEC Paris (École des Hautes Études Commerciales de Paris) is a business grande école founded in 1881 by the Paris Chamber of Commerce, with a first class of 57 students. Since 1964, the main campus has been in Jouy-en-Josas, a green suburb southwest of Paris, set around a 19th-century château. HEC has roughly 4,500 students across its degree programs, from more than 135 nationalities, which makes it far smaller and more selective than a classic public university.
HEC is number 1 in Europe in the Financial Times "European Business Schools" ranking (a position held in 2024), and its flagship program, Master in Management (Grande École), is ranked number 2 worldwide by the Financial Times in 2025. According to the FT, 99 percent of MiM graduates are employed within 3 months of graduation, and the average salary reported 3 years after graduation is around €121,000.
Very important for Romanian students: HEC has no classic post-bac bachelor equivalent to a 3-4 year degree taken straight after high school, the way a public university offers. The French business system is built differently. There are two real paths for a high-school graduate:
1) The direct post-bac route (the only bachelor accessible right after high school): BA / BASc in Data, Society and Organisations, a double degree with Bocconi (Milan), lasting 3 years (180 ECTS), taught entirely in English. The first 3 semesters are at Bocconi, the last 3 at HEC. 2) The classic route to the Grande École program (Master in Management): this is NOT accessible directly after high school. French students first complete 2 years of classe préparatoire (prépa) and sit a concours (an extremely competitive entrance exam); international students who already hold a completed bachelor (180 ECTS) apply directly or through the "Join a School in France" platform.
For a Romanian, the most common practical path is: complete a 3-year bachelor (in Romania, at an EU university, or even at the HEC-Bocconi BA), then apply to the Master in Management, the program that gives you the elite HEC diploma. French is not an admission criterion for the MiM; the program has full tracks in English.
How to get into HEC Paris
Choose the realistic route for you
After high school you have a single direct entry: the BA Data, Society and Organisations (double degree with Bocconi, 3 years, English). The flagship Grande École / Master in Management program is POSTGRADUATE: you first need a 3-year bachelor (180 ECTS). Our mentors help you decide which route fits your profile and budget.
Post-bac route: apply through the Bocconi portal
For the HEC-Bocconi BA, applications are made through the Bocconi portal and are assessed jointly by the two schools. You will need: transcripts from your last 2 years of high school, proof of English at B2 level, either SAT/ACT or the Bocconi online test, a motivation letter, a CV and an online video interview.
Respect the application rounds
The BA has round-based admissions. For 2025-26: Round 1 deadline 26 September (results 12 November), Round 2 deadline 23 January (results mid-March), Round 3 deadline 13 April (results mid-May). The academic year starts at Bocconi, in September. Apply in round 1 or 2 for the most places.
MiM route: first complete a 3-year bachelor
For the Master in Management (Grande École) you need a bachelor of at least 3 years and 180 ECTS in any field (business, engineering, sciences, arts). French students come via the prépa (2 years) plus concours route; you, as a Romanian with a non-French bachelor, apply directly to HEC or through the "Join a School in France" platform (one application, 5 French schools).
MiM file: test, English, reference
For the MiM you need: a GMAT (including Focus), GRE or TageMage test (no minimum score imposed at application), proof of English (TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS or Cambridge) (waived for native speakers or graduates of English-taught programs), a CV, diplomas, and one academic reference letter. Fee: €170 for direct application or €250 via Join a School in France.
The admission interview
Shortlisted candidates take a 25-30 minute interview in English, about their background, motivation and goals. Direct applicants take it online; those applying through Join a School in France can take it in one of roughly 80 centers around the world. The final decision comes after the interview, on a rolling round basis.
Costs and scholarships
Post-bac route: BA with Bocconi
Flagship program: Master in Management
Academic excellence
HEC awards merit-based scholarships to candidates with the strongest academic and application profiles. They cover part of the tuition and are granted on the basis of the file, without a complicated separate request. For exceptional profiles, the reduction can be substantial.
EU citizen advantage
As a Romanian (EU) citizen, you are exempt from the additional €2,000 fee applied to non-EU internationals on the Master in Management. In addition, HEC offers need-based scholarships and financing plans for families with limited income, assessed individually.
Erasmus+ and credit
For the BA route, Erasmus+ exchanges can bring a monthly grant. Many banks and foundations offer loans for grande école studies, and for the MiM some companies sponsor students. Our mentors help you map all the available funding sources.

Talk to a mentorFrequently asked questions
Does HEC Paris have a bachelor I can take directly after high school?
Not in the classic sense. HEC has no business bachelor of its own lasting 3-4 years taken directly after the baccalaureate, the way a public university offers. The only bachelor-type option accessible right after high school is the BA / BASc in Data, Society and Organisations, a double degree with Bocconi University (Milan), lasting 3 years (180 ECTS), taught entirely in English, with the first 3 semesters at Bocconi and the last 3 at HEC. The rest of what we call "the elite HEC diploma" comes at master level.
What is the Grande École program and why is it so valuable?
HEC's Grande École program is in fact a Master in Management (MiM), the school's flagship program and the one that made HEC famous. It is ranked number 2 worldwide by the Financial Times in 2025. According to the FT, 99 percent of graduates are employed within 3 months of graduation, and the average salary at 3 years is around €121,000. Note: this is a postgraduate program, not a post-bac one. You first need a 3-year bachelor.
What is classe préparatoire (prépa) and do I have to do it as a Romanian?
Classe préparatoire (prépa) is the classic French system: 2 intensive years of preparation after high school, followed by a concours (an extremely competitive entrance exam) through which French students enter the Grande École program. As a Romanian you are not required to do prépa. If you already hold a 3-year bachelor (180 ECTS), you apply directly to HEC or through the "Join a School in France" platform, on the route called admissions parallèles (parallel admissions), without the prépa concours.
How much does HEC Paris cost for a Romanian?
HEC is a private grande école, so there are no cheap statutory EU fees like at a public university. For the Master in Management, full program tuition (2025-26) is around €57,700, with an announced increase toward €70,000 for upcoming intakes. Plus living costs of €12,000-€18,000 per year. For the BA with Bocconi, tuition at the Bocconi level is around €17,000 per year. As an EU citizen you are exempt from the additional €2,000 fee applied to non-EU students on the MiM, and HEC offers merit-based and need-based scholarships.
Do I need to know French to study at HEC?
For the Master in Management program, French is NOT an admission criterion, and the program has full tracks in English. Instead, you need proof of English (TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS or Cambridge), waived for native speakers or graduates of English-taught programs. The BA with Bocconi is also entirely in English (B2 level required). French helps with integration and internships, but it is not an admission barrier.
Which tests do I need: SAT, GMAT, GRE or TageMage?
It depends on the program. For the post-bac route (BA with Bocconi) you need SAT or ACT, or the Bocconi online test, plus proof of English at B2 level. For the Master in Management you need one of GMAT (including GMAT Focus), GRE or TageMage. HEC states that no minimum score is imposed to apply, but a competitive score greatly increases your chances in a very selective process. Our mentors help you with the testing strategy.
What are the application deadlines?
For the BA with Bocconi (2025-26): Round 1 deadline 26 September, Round 2 deadline 23 January, Round 3 deadline 13 April. For the Master in Management direct application (2025-26): five rounds, from 1 October to 28 May. For Join a School in France: four rounds, from 8 October to 16 April. Recommendation: apply in the early rounds, when there are the most places and more time for the visa and logistics.
What is the difference between HEC, ESSEC, ESCP and a classic university?
HEC, ESSEC, ESCP are business grandes écoles, selective elite institutions, smaller than a public university, with a focus on management, strong networking and career placement. A public university (for example a state university in France or Spain) offers classic post-bac bachelors at low fees for EU citizens. HEC does not play in that category: it is private, expensive and accessed mostly at master level. If you want a cheap business bachelor straight after high school, public EU university alternatives are more suitable; if you want the elite HEC management brand, the target is the Master in Management.
