About Aarhus University

Aarhus University (AU) is a public university founded in 1928, the second-oldest in Denmark after the University of Copenhagen. It is consistently number 2 in Denmark and a comprehensive research institution, ranked 131st in QS World 2026. The main campus, Universitetsparken, is a green park renowned for its unified yellow-brick architecture, in the heart of the city of Aarhus, Denmark's second city.

AU has over 38,000 students, of whom more than 4,000 are international, representing around 120 nationalities. The university is organized into five faculties: Arts, Natural Sciences, Technical Sciences, Health, and Business and Social Sciences (Aarhus BSS). AU offers more than 50 full degree programs taught in English at bachelor's and master's level, which makes it very accessible for Romanian students who do not speak Danish.

Strong fields at AU: business and economics through Aarhus BSS, one of the few business schools in the world with triple accreditation (AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA), natural sciences and engineering, health and medicine, as well as arts and humanities. AU is a member of the Coimbra Group and of the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities network, alongside institutions such as Oxford, Bologna and Heidelberg.

For Romanian students, AU is one of the best opportunities in Northern Europe. As an EU citizen you pay zero tuition: bachelor's study is completely free for EU, EEA and Swiss citizens, exactly as for Danes. Bachelor's degrees follow the Bologna system and usually take 3 years (180 ECTS). Applications are made centrally through Optagelse.dk, the national portal of the coordinated admission system KOT. Cost of living in Aarhus: approximately 800-1,200 EUR per month, more affordable than Copenhagen.

How to apply to Aarhus University

1

Choose the program and the language of instruction

AU offers more than 50 full degree programs in English. Check on the AU website whether the bachelor's degree you have in mind (for example Business Administration, Economics, Cognitive Science, Engineering) is taught in English or Danish. For Romanians, English-taught programs are the best route, with no need for Danish.

2

Apply through Optagelse.dk (the KOT system)

Applications to all Danish universities are centralized through Optagelse.dk, the portal of the coordinated admission system KOT. You can choose up to 8 programs ranked by priority; you are admitted to the highest possible priority based on your grade. Authentication uses the Danish MitID (there is an application guide without MitID for international students).

3

Prove your English (IELTS 6.5+)

For English-taught programs you need English B level: IELTS Academic minimum 6.5 or TOEFL iBT minimum 83. A few programs require English A (IELTS 7.0 / TOEFL 100). A Romanian Baccalaureate with advanced-level English can be accepted as proof in certain cases, but the official test is the safe route.

4

Convert your Baccalaureate and admission grade

The Romanian Baccalaureate diploma is assessed as a Danish access qualification. AU calculates an equivalent admission grade for you, used for ranking on programs with limited places. Certain programs require specific subjects at A or B level (for example mathematics for Economics or Engineering). Check the exact requirements on the program page.

5

CPR, EU citizen registration and possible SU

As a Romanian (EU) citizen you do not need a study visa. After arrival you obtain a CPR (the Danish personal number) and an EU registration certificate. Important: as an EU citizen you can become eligible for SU (the Danish state grant, Statens Uddannelsesstotte) if you work alongside your studies for a certain number of hours per week. SU conditions should be checked individually at SU.dk or Borger.dk.

6

Enrolment and start of studies

Admission responses usually appear on 26 July. After admission you confirm your place, complete online enrolment at AU and arrange accommodation (Aarhus has university halls through AU Housing plus the private market). The academic year starts in September. AU organizes an introduction week for international students, with campus orientation and support with formalities.

Automatic EU advantage

Free tuition

As a Romanian (EU) citizen you automatically pay zero tuition at AU, identical to a Dane. You do not have to do anything special, just prove your EU citizenship through a passport or ID card. The saving compared to a non-European student is 8,000 to 17,300 EUR per year, that is tens of thousands of euros across the whole degree.

SU and student job

SU state grant

As an EU citizen you can become eligible for SU (Statens Uddannelsesstotte), the monthly Danish state grant, if you work alongside your studies for a minimum number of hours per week and meet the conditions for an EU worker. Many Romanian students combine studying with a part-time job in Aarhus. Check your eligibility on SU.dk or Borger.dk.

Grants for Romanians

Erasmus+ and RO grants

Erasmus+: if you come initially on a 1-2 semester mobility, you receive a monthly mobility grant. In addition, many cities and county councils in Romania have their own grant programs for their students abroad (check with your town hall or county council). These funds can cover part of the cost of living in Aarhus.

As an EU citizen, bachelor's study at AU is completely free: you pay zero tuition, exactly like a Danish student. For comparison, a non-European student pays between 8,000 and 17,300 EUR per year. The only real cost for Romanians is living in Aarhus, estimated at 800-1,200 EUR per month (accommodation 400-650 EUR, food 250-350 EUR, transport 40 EUR, other expenses 100-150 EUR). How do I apply to Aarhus University as a Romanian student?

Applications to all Danish universities are centralized through Optagelse.dk, the portal of the coordinated admission system KOT. You can choose up to 8 programs ranked by priority and you are admitted to the highest possible priority based on your grade. Authentication uses the Danish MitID, but there is a guide for applying without MitID aimed at international students. The Romanian Baccalaureate diploma is assessed as an access qualification, and AU calculates an equivalent admission grade for you.

What level of English do I need at Aarhus University?

For English-taught programs you need English B level: IELTS Academic minimum 6.5 or TOEFL iBT minimum 83. A few more demanding programs require English A level: IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 100. A Romanian Baccalaureate with advanced-level English can be accepted as proof in some cases, but an official IELTS or TOEFL test is the safe way to meet the requirement.

Are there programs in English at Aarhus University?

Yes. AU offers more than 50 full degree programs taught in English at bachelor's and master's level, so you do not need Danish to study here. Among the strong English-taught bachelor's degrees are those at Aarhus BSS (Business Administration, Economics and Business Administration), Cognitive Science, engineering programs and natural sciences. Some bachelor's degrees are taught in Danish, so check the language of instruction on each program's page before you apply.

Can I receive SU, the Danish state grant, as a Romanian student?

Possibly, yes. SU (Statens Uddannelsesstotte) is the monthly Danish state grant. As an EU citizen, you can become eligible if you meet the conditions for an EU worker, in practice if you work alongside your studies for a minimum number of hours per week. Many Romanian students combine university with a part-time job in Aarhus, which can open access to SU for them. Eligibility is assessed individually; check the up-to-date rules on SU.dk or Borger.dk.

How long does the bachelor's degree at Aarhus University take?

Bachelor's degrees at AU follow the European Bologna system and usually take 3 years (180 ECTS), shorter than in Spain (4 years) or the USA (4 years). 1 ECTS represents approximately 25-30 hours of total study, and a standard academic year has 60 ECTS. After the bachelor's you can continue with a 2-year master's (120 ECTS), also free as an EU citizen. The ECTS system lets you transfer credits to other European universities.

Why is a CPR needed and how do I register as an EU citizen?

As a Romanian (EU) citizen you do not need a study visa for Denmark. After arrival you must obtain an EU registration certificate and a CPR, the Danish personal number used for healthcare, banking, contracts and administration. The CPR gives you access to the Danish public health system and is required for almost any formality. AU offers support with these steps during the introduction week for international students.

Can I stay and work in Denmark after graduation?

Yes, as an EU citizen! Unlike the USA or the UK where you need a work visa, as a Romanian (EU) citizen you have the automatic right to work in Denmark without a special permit. Denmark has a strong labor market, especially in business and finance (many Aarhus BSS graduates), tech and engineering, health, green energy and shipping (Maersk). Aarhus is a growing hub for companies and startups. With an AU degree recognized across the EU, you can later work anywhere in the Union without a visa.
