Student Life in Milan: What It’s Like to Study in Italy as a Romanian

Mornings in Milan are a symphony for the senses. The intense aroma of fresh espresso fills the air, mixing with the smell of a warm croissant, just out of the oven, from the bakery on the corner.

I savor the first sips on the small terrace, while the gentle rays of the sun slip between the historic buildings, lighting up the cobbled streets.

The city wakes up, and the hurried steps of the locals set its rhythm. The walk to university is a ritual in itself: the trams hum along the rails, the city buzzes, and every morning is a promise of new discoveries.

Studying in Milan: more than a degree, a launchpad to the world

Studying in Italy does not just mean earning a degree, it means having access to an elite, internationally recognized education. The professors who teach in English are not only prestigious academics, but also active researchers, with publications in international journals and renowned collaborations.

Many of them have taught or worked in the United Kingdom and the United States, and their academic and professional networks stretch across the globe.

For students, this means not only access to the latest discoveries, but also direct opportunities for networking and international collaboration right from your university years.

Universities in Milan offer an interactive learning environment, tailored to the modern world. For example, as a medical student, one of my favorite lessons was a Problem-Based Learning seminar, in which my team and I presented a case in the form of a patient-doctor skit.

What is more, whether you are passionate about research and want to be part of a scientific club or take part in international conferences, the opportunities are limitless.

If you want to get actively involved in student life, you can join associations that organize events, support international students, or campaign for better academic conditions. And if sport is your passion, the universities' football, volleyball, or basketball teams are always on the lookout for new talent.

On the other hand, the Italian bureaucratic process can sometimes be a challenge. From enrolment and diploma recognition to obtaining residence permits, international students need to be patient and well informed. I know from my own experience how frustrating it can be to wait for hours on end at a counter just for a simple residency document.

The good news, though, is that there are student groups who share their experiences and help one another through this administrative jungle.

Milan is an epicenter of higher education, home to world-renowned universities such as Bocconi, a leader in economics and business, Politecnico di Milano, among the best for engineering and design, Istituto Marangoni and NABA, a paradise for creatives passionate about fashion and the arts, or Università degli Studi di Milano, with a vast academic offering in science and medicine.

Whichever path you choose to follow, a degree from here opens doors anywhere in the world.

A social life straight out of the movies

Studying in Milan means living in a city where the whole world meets at the same table. Your classmates will come from every corner of the globe, and the motto "unity in diversity" will no longer be just a slogan, but a way of life.

Friends from Brazil, Turkey, Iran, Germany, or Korea will become a second family to you, so let's be honest, if you want to travel, you will always have "a place to stay" anywhere in the world. But perhaps the most beautiful cultural exchange happens right in the kitchen: we cook for one another, sharing the tastes of home.

An evening with pasta made the Naples way, followed by a Turkish dessert and an Iranian tea? Completely normal in Milan.

When the sun sets over the city, Milan turns into a vibrant painting. Navigli, with its little lights reflected in the canals, invites you to an Aperol Spritz, and the evenings lead toward hidden clubs, where the music vibrates between historic walls. But Milan is not only about nightlife, it is also the capital of events.

Here, every week celebrates something new: Fashion Week, Design Week, Art Week, but also lesser-known festivals, such as Gelato Week, Coffee Week, or Music Week. Whatever you are passionate about, you will always find something to discover. The reality, however, is that the academic schedule can be demanding. During exam periods, the libraries become a second home, and the evenings often end with lectures instead of cocktails.

It is all about balance, and student life in Milan teaches you to manage your time like a true professional.

On the other hand, the Lombard capital comes at a cost. Rents are among the highest in Italy, and outings to restaurants or cafes can add up fast. Fortunately, there are always student-budget-friendly options, discounted aperitivo, university canteens with subsidized meals and, surprisingly, the price of supermarket products is very close to that in Romania.

Milan, the city where you discover yourself

Student life in Milan is not limited to lectures and libraries, it is an opportunity to discover yourself and build your identity. Milan offers you a unique combination of opportunities for personal growth, both professionally and in exploring the passions that will define you in the future.

On a weekend, you can find yourself on the shores of Lake Como, just an hour away, or explore the ancient history of Rome. Milan is the epicenter of Europe, and by train you can quickly reach the Dolomite mountains for trekking, or relax in the sun on the beaches of Liguria. With every getaway, you broaden your horizons and enrich your life with experiences that will transform you.

One of the city's greatest assets is its international character. Milan is, without a doubt, one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Italy. Here, you will get by in English, whether you are at university, at the cafe, or at the supermarket. Still, why not let yourself be swept up by the charm of the Italian language? Its melodious sound will give you a deeper connection with the local culture and encourage you to fully integrate into the life of the city. And it will certainly help you at the administrative offices, too.

Every neighborhood in Milan has its own personality. You can find yourself in the bohemian atmosphere of Brera, feel right at home as a hipster in Isola, or spend your days as a studious student in Citta Studi. Milan is a walkable city, with efficient public transport, so you will be able to get around quickly, whether on foot or by metro, to discover all its corners.

Maybe Milan is for you, too

Student life in Milan is not just about lectures, but about freedom, discovery, and creating memories that will stay with you for life. Every day is a blend of work and pleasure, of learning and adventure. Milan is waiting for you, with open arms, to write your own story.

So, can you picture yourself sipping a cappuccino on the steps of the Duomo before class? Maybe La Dolce Vita is closer than you think.
