About Durham

Durham University (Universitas Dunelmensis in Latin) was founded in 1832 through an Act of Parliament, becoming the 3rd oldest university in England after Oxford (1096) and Cambridge (1209). In 2026 it turns 194 years old. Location: Durham, North East England (around 50,000 inhabitants), with the city centre being a UNESCO World Heritage Site including the legendary Durham Cathedral (11th-century Norman architecture) and Durham Castle.

What makes Durham unique: a collegiate system like Oxbridge. 17 colleges in total (16 for UG/PG plus Ustinov College PG-only). When you apply you choose a specific college or opt for an "open application" (the university allocates one to you). University College ("Castle"), the first college, is literally located inside Durham Castle, an 11th-century episcopal residence. Other notable colleges: Hatfield, St John's, Trevelyan, Van Mildert. Colleges offer accommodation, dining hall, libraries, sport teams, plus their own social community. Cultural distinction: Harry Potter filming locations at Durham Cathedral for the first 2 films (Hogwarts scenes). The castle plus cathedral are iconic.

4 main faculties: Faculty of Arts and Humanities (Classics, English, History, Languages, Music, Philosophy, Theology; Durham is among the best in the UK for Theology and Classics); Faculty of Science (Biosciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Mathematical Sciences, Physics, Psychology); Faculty of Social Sciences and Health (Anthropology, Archaeology, Durham Law School, Education, Geography, Government and International Affairs, Sociology, Sport and Exercise Sciences); Durham University Business School. Important note: Durham no longer offers Medicine. The medical school closed in 2017 and merged with Newcastle University Faculty of Medical Sciences. If you want an MBChB, do NOT apply to Durham.

For Romanian students, Durham is an excellent option for those who want an Oxbridge-style collegiate system without the Oxbridge competition. Typical profile: Humanities Bacalaureat track (Law with LNAT, English Literature, History, Classics, Theology; Durham is among the top 3 in the UK for all of these), science track with Maths (Maths, Durham is top 10 UK for Maths, offers a reduced offer if you take the TMUA), science track with Biology (Biosciences, Psychology). Atmosphere: a small and quiet town (around 50,000 inhabitants), very safe, traditional academic atmosphere, social life centred on the colleges. Notable alumni: Fiona Hill (current Chancellor of Durham, former US National Security Council member, Russia/Putin expert), William Whewell (philosopher, coined the term "scientist" in 1834), Justin Welby (former Archbishop of Canterbury). 1/3 of students are international from 150+ countries.
