About LSE

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) was founded in 1895 by members of the Fabian Society (Sidney and Beatrice Webb, George Bernard Shaw, Graham Wallas), with the mission of improving society through education in the Social Sciences. 100% Social Sciences specialisation, NOT STEM, NOT Medicine, NOT classical Humanities. Main fields: Economics, Politics, International Relations, Law, Finance, Statistics, Sociology, Anthropology.

What makes LSE unique: the most SELECTIVE Russell Group university: ~6-12% acceptance overall (more selective than Imperial 14% or Oxford 15%). Roughly 28,000-30,000 applications per year for ~1,850-1,900 undergraduate places. LSE DOES NOT INTERVIEW for ANY course (UNIQUE compared with Oxbridge, Imperial, Cambridge); the decision is made strictly on the UCAS application + predicted grades + Personal Statement + admission tests. This means your Personal Statement is the critical factor for getting in.

For Romanian students, LSE is the ideal option if you want careers in City of London finance, investment banking, central banking, consultancy, government, politics or international relations. Typical profile: a science-track Baccalaureate with Maths 9.5+ (for Economics) or a humanities track with very strong English (for Politics, IR, Sociology). 20+ Nobel laureates affiliated with LSE (especially in Economics: Hayek, Coase, Stiglitz, Krugman). 37+ Heads of State among alumni (PMs, Presidents, central bank governors). Top recruiters: Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, BlackRock, BCG, IMF, World Bank. Caveat: LSE has no STEM, so if you want Engineering or CS, choose Imperial.

How to apply to LSE

1

UCAS application (LSE code: L72)

You apply only through UCAS; LSE does not accept direct applications. A maximum of 5 choices in total. LSE uses the institution code L72. Strategy for Romanians: LSE as a reach, Russell Group targets (UCL, Warwick, Bristol), plus a safety. You can apply to several LSE programmes, but you receive an OFFER for only ONE (LSE chooses the most suitable programme for you).

2

Deadline 14 January 2026

UCAS deadline for LSE: 14 January 2026, 18:00 UK time. LSE does not offer Medicine, so there is no 15 October deadline. LSE recommends applying early (October-December) because applications are assessed on a rolling basis. Applications received earlier do NOT get preferential treatment, but the extra time helps you prepare your Personal Statement.

3

TMUA (Economics) or LNAT (Law)

TMUA REQUIRED from 2026 entry for: BSc Economics, BSc Econometrics and Mathematical Economics. TMUA recommended (a boost) for: Maths and Economics, Financial Maths and Statistics, Maths with Data Science, Data Science, Actuarial Science, etc. LNAT REQUIRED for LLB Law. For Romanians: a target TMUA score of ~7.0+ for LSE (out of 9.0 max). 2 sittings: September-October and January. 3-4 months of preparation needed. Test at Pearson VUE Bucharest or online.

4

Personal Statement (CRITICAL for LSE!)

The Personal Statement is the DECISIVE factor for LSE (since LSE does NOT interview). From 2026, instead of the single Personal Statement, UCAS uses three structured questions, 4,000 characters total. LSE recommends an 80% academic focus (course motivation, books read, your own research), 20% relevant extracurricular activities. For Romanians: cite specific LSE courses and faculty research, and demonstrate deep interest in the Social Sciences. You use the same answers to the three structured questions for all 5 UCAS choices, so adapt them carefully to your field (Economics, Politics, Law).

5

LSE does NOT interview (UNIQUE!)

LSE is the ONLY top UK university that does NOT interview for ANY undergraduate course. Unlike Oxbridge (compulsory interviews) or Imperial (interviews for Engineering plus Medicine), LSE decides strictly on the basis of: the UCAS application + predicted grades + Personal Statement + admission test score (TMUA/LNAT). Implications for Romanians: you cannot make up for weak grades with a good interview performance; everything depends on your profile on paper. Invest in your Personal Statement and TMUA preparation.

6

Conditional offer + Baccalaureate

Conditional offers are based on predicted grades. For the Romanian Baccalaureate: an overall Baccalaureate average of 9.5+ and 9.5+ in the relevant subjects (sometimes 9.7+ for Economics). Equivalent to A*AA or AAA at A-Levels (IB 38+ with 766 at higher level). Plus IELTS 7.0+ (none below 6.5 per component) or TOEFL 100+. LSE is among the strictest on grades in the UK. After the June-July Baccalaureate, you confirm that you have met the conditions. Final answer: August. You start in September.
