About ESSEC
ESSEC Business School is a French grande école de business, founded in 1907. In France, grandes écoles are selective elite institutions, separate from the public university system, and ESSEC is one of the most respected business schools in Europe. Its main campus is in Cergy, in the Paris region (about 30 minutes from central Paris by RER A train), with a second academic campus in Singapore and a presence in Rabat (Morocco) and La Défense.
ESSEC holds triple accreditation (AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA), a status known as the "Triple Crown" held by fewer than 1 percent of the world's business schools. Its flagship program, the Master in Management (the Grande École program, usually accessed through the prépa competition in France), is consistently in the global top 10 of the Financial Times ranking. ESSEC has around 7,800 students and a network of more than 70,000 alumni worldwide.
For a Romanian high-school graduate, the relevant path is not the Grande École program (which requires years of French prépa), but the Global BBA: a 4-year (240 ECTS) bachelor's degree, taught entirely in English, which you apply to directly after the Baccalaureate (post-bac) through an online application. The Global BBA includes international mobility, internships and the option to study part of the program at the Singapore campus. The program is consistently ranked number 1 in France among business bachelor's degrees (Le Point, Challenges, Le Figaro Etudiant rankings).
Important for parents: ESSEC is a private school, and the Global BBA has high tuition fees (around EUR 16,500 per year at the Cergy campus in 2026-2027), comparable to a private university rather than to the symbolic fees of European public universities. There is no reduced statutory EU fee here, because ESSEC is not a public university. In return, ESSEC offers merit scholarships (for example the ESSEC scholarship of around EUR 10,000 for international applicants) that reduce the cost. The investment is justified by the brand, the alumni network and the very strong career placement of a grande école de business.
How to apply to the Global BBA
Direct online application
As a Romanian high-school graduate, you apply directly to ESSEC, online, through the Global BBA admissions portal (the track for international diplomas). You create an account, choose your starting campus (Cergy or Singapore) and pay the application fee (around EUR 50 to EUR 100, depending on the campus).
Academic file (Baccalaureate)
You upload your transcripts from the last 3 years of high school and your Baccalaureate diploma (or proof of enrollment, if you are still in the 12th grade). ESSEC assesses your academic profile, with an emphasis on mathematics, overall performance and consistency.
English test
Since the program is in English, you need proof of language: TOEFL iBT 90 plus, IELTS 6.5 plus or TOEIC 850 plus. The requirement may be waived if you completed your last 2 years of high school entirely in English. Some tracks may also require an aptitude test (for example the SAT or an ESSEC test); check the program page.
Essays and CV
The application includes a one-page CV and motivation essays in which you explain why ESSEC, why business and what you want to build. Optional but recommended: academic recommendation letters from teachers. This is the part where you show your personality, not just your grades.
Video interview
If your file is selected, you are invited to a video interview of around 30 minutes with the admissions team. This tests your motivation, clarity of thinking, spoken English and fit with the ESSEC culture. It is the decisive step after the file.
Decision and enrollment
You receive the admission decision by email. To confirm your place, you pay a deposit of EUR 5,500 (Cergy or Singapore) within about 2 weeks, an amount that is deducted from tuition. Global BBA admissions run in several rounds; applying in winter (typical deadlines January to February) is recommended to secure a place and for the merit scholarships.
Costs and merit scholarships

Up to EUR 10,000
ESSEC awards merit scholarships based on the academic file and profile, open to international applicants. The ESSEC scholarship reaches up to around EUR 10,000 and is applied directly to tuition. Applying early (the winter round) increases the chances of obtaining a scholarship.
Results-based scholarships
Candidates with very strong academic results (a high Baccalaureate average, achievements in olympiads or competitions, a solid SAT score if required) are prioritized for excellence scholarships. A strong profile matters both for admission and for the value of the scholarship offered.
Loans and RO scholarships
In addition to ESSEC scholarships, you can combine them with bank study loans and possible scholarship programs from Romania (the Ministry of Education or local city-hall programs). Check the terms of each source, since some can be combined and others cannot.

What is a grande école and why does ESSEC matter?
A grande école is a selective French elite institution, separate from the public university system. Grandes écoles de business train future managers and entrepreneurs, with a strong brand and an influential alumni network. ESSEC, founded in 1907, is one of the most respected business schools in Europe, with triple accreditation (AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA) and a Master in Management consistently in the global top 10 of the Financial Times. For a Romanian student, ESSEC offers an international brand, teaching in English through the Global BBA and access to a global career network.
What is the difference between the Global BBA and the Grande École program?
The Grande École program (which leads to the Master in Management) is the classic French route, usually accessed through a competitive exam after the prépa years (French preparatory classes) or through master's-level admissions. It is not the practical path for a Romanian high-school graduate.
The Global BBA is the program that suits you: a 4-year (240 ECTS) bachelor's degree, entirely in English, which you apply to directly after the Baccalaureate (post-bac), without prépa. It includes international mobility, internships and the option to spend periods at the Singapore campus.
How much does the ESSEC Global BBA cost per year for a Romanian?
The Global BBA at the Cergy campus costs around EUR 16,500 per year (2026-2027 academic year), so roughly EUR 60,000-EUR 66,000 over all 4 years in tuition alone. At the Singapore campus the fees are expressed in dollars and are higher.
Note: ESSEC is a private school, so you do not get the symbolic statutory EU fees of a French public university. On top of tuition you add accommodation and living in the Paris region (around EUR 10,000-EUR 15,000 per year). ESSEC merit scholarships can significantly reduce tuition.
What scholarships can I receive at ESSEC as a Romanian student?
ESSEC awards merit scholarships open to international applicants, based on the academic file and profile. The ESSEC scholarship reaches up to around EUR 10,000 and is applied directly to tuition. There are also other scholarships specific to a campus or region.
In addition to ESSEC scholarships, as a Romanian you can combine them with study loans from banks and possible scholarship programs from Romania. Recommendation: apply in the winter round, because applying early increases both your chances of admission and of receiving a larger merit scholarship.
What grades and tests do I need for ESSEC Global BBA admission?
ESSEC looks at your transcripts from the last 3 years of high school and your Baccalaureate diploma, with an emphasis on mathematics and on the consistency of your results. A competitive profile has a good overall average (indicatively a Baccalaureate average of 8.5 plus) and solid grades in quantitative subjects.
For language you need TOEFL iBT 90 plus, IELTS 6.5 plus or TOEIC 850 plus (the requirement may be waived if you completed your last 2 years of high school in English). Some tracks may also require an aptitude test (for example the SAT or an ESSEC test), plus motivation essays, a CV and the video interview.
Is the program taught in English? Do I need to know French?
Yes, the Global BBA is taught entirely in English, so you do not need French to follow the courses. This is one of the big differences from the classic programs of French public universities, which are in French.
Still, we recommend learning French along the way: it helps enormously for daily life in the Paris region, for internships at French companies and for social integration. ESSEC usually offers French courses for international students.
Do I need a visa as a Romanian citizen to study at ESSEC?
No. As a Romanian citizen you are an EU citizen, and France is part of the European Union, so you do not need a study visa to study at the Cergy campus. You can move and enroll freely, with your ID card or passport.
Note, however: the absence of a visa does not mean reduced fees. Since ESSEC is private, you pay grande école tuition regardless of citizenship. For the Singapore campus, the visa rules are different (Singapore not being in the EU) and are handled separately by ESSEC.
What career opportunities do I have after the Global BBA at ESSEC?
Graduates of a grande école de business generally have very strong career placement: consulting, finance, marketing, tech, entrepreneurship and international roles. ESSEC has a network of more than 70,000 alumni and partnerships with global companies, plus internships integrated into the program.
After the Global BBA you can enter the job market directly or continue with a master's (including ESSEC's Grande École program / Master in Management, which is in the global top 10 of the Financial Times). With an EU degree you can work throughout the European Union without a visa, and the Singapore campus also opens up opportunities in Asia.
