Harvard. A dream for many, a destination for few. What sets apart the ones who make it? It is not just perfect grades or impressive activities, plenty of people apply with achievements like these. The difference is made by the admissions essay, the place where your personal voice becomes the focal point. Prestigious universities like Harvard are not looking only for academic results. They are looking for authentic, well-told stories that show who you are beyond the numbers and the awards.
But how do you write an essay that captures attention and stays in the mind of the people who read it?
The secret? Storytelling that inspires.
A memorable essay is not a list of achievements or a collection of sophisticated phrases. It is a story. Your story. One that manages to create an emotional connection, to inspire, and to show how your experiences have shaped you. Harvard wants to see the person behind the application, the values, the emotions, and the way you look at the world.
But how do you pull that off? Here is the 3-step strategy for writing the essay that can turn your dream into reality.
Start with a captivating moment
Your essay has to be like a movie trailer: the first few sentences must grab the reader instantly. Choose a moment from your life that had a profound impact on you, it could be a victory, a failure, a discovery, or an unexpected experience.
For example:
"Noise. A second of silence takes me back to the stair I was standing on. I tried to catch my breath, but I couldn't. There were too many people, so much movement, I felt suffocated."
This opening creates suspense. We do not know what it is about, a sports competition, a play, a speech? But we want to find out. Let the story unfold gradually and pull the reader in emotionally.
Show, don't tell
A successful essay is built on details that turn the reader into a witness to your story. Instead of saying "I was nervous," describe how your heart was pounding, how your palms were sweating, or how you felt you could no longer find your words.
"It was an enormous room, packed to the brim. The spotlights were blinding me, and the emotions were so strong that I couldn't flex my fingers. My palms were sweating, and a warm hand woke me from my daydream, reminding me that I had to stand up and fight for my moment."
This kind of description makes you feel the story, makes you be there with the author.
Offer an ending that inspires
A Harvard essay does not have to be perfect. Vulnerability is the key. Show how you felt, how you learned, how that moment transformed you. The ending should wrap up the story, but also offer a perspective on who you are today.
For example:
"In the end, as my team laughed and applauded together, I realized something simple but profound: victory is not just about the prize. It is about the connections we build, about the emotions we live through, and about the moments when we allow ourselves to be who we truly are. That was the beginning of my understanding of what it means to belong to a community, and that is what I want to carry forward."
This shows a personal lesson and an emotional impact, two essential elements of a memorable essay.
You are the author of your own story. Write it the way only you can write it.
Sample essay: how to get into Harvard University
The original essay in English:
"Noise.
A second of silence suddenly takes me back to the stair I was standing on. I tried to catch my breath, but I couldn't. There were too many people, so much movement, I felt suffocated. I opened my first button and closed my eyes again, hoping for one more moment of peace.
Romanya: Giresun Yöresi, 2 minutes the screen shows. I close my eyes yet again, fully intending to stand up in a few seconds. But this time I just couldn't hold back my emotions, and thousands of tiny bumps began to form on my arm. I feel a warm hand gently touching my back, and a sudden awakening hits me. I get up, pull my headscarf back and look around to see how much time we have left. One minute, the time shows. I head to my position, uncontrollably scratching my itchy wool socks.
It was an enormous room, overfilled with people. I was so blinded by the strong spotlights that I couldn't see any faces, but I felt their energy vibrating at all corners. I quickly buttoned my shirt and squeezed Elena's hand in mine. None of us uttered any words as we looked at each other and back at the audience. „What if I'm the one that makes a mistake again?", I think to myself as the moment draws near. Images from my first performance fill my mind. There hasn't been a show. I didn't wonder whether we lost that competition because of my mistake. Nobody ever told me if it was my fault, no one made it clear if I should feel guilty or not, and I was left with my own thoughts. I blink nervously, trying to come back to the present. My palms were sweating and the emotions grew so strong that I couldn't flex my fingers. My muscles refused to cooperate and a thrill quickly shuddered my body.
Five, six, seven, eight! The music hits like a drug. I feel nothing but a calming flow as I begin dancing on the scene. My mind is empty as I connect with every beat of the song. There is no more audience, no thoughts or fear. A pure feeling of happiness surrounds me, a warmth that encompasses me from the inside. With every move, I merge with my surroundings, with the music, the stage and the lights. At the end, there are no more moves. My entire body becomes one with the beats, as the entire team screams and hits the floor with full strength.
The music suddenly turns into applause, the lights turn off and we can see the public standing up and cheering. I step behind the curtains, shaking. Thousands of mixed thoughts and emotions run through my mind this second and a feeling of confusion encompasses me. Was it good? My mind keeps replaying every move, almost refusing to accept that the dance is over. The adrenaline slowly drops down, and I can finally feel my breath again. I close my eyes and enjoy the last applause.
Four of us already took off their shoes and comfortably sat on the floor in an attempt to relieve the soreness. I follow their example and find myself a spot to sit. As we gather in a circle, I feel a weight being lifted off my shoulders as the show is over. A feeling of satisfaction and joy connects all of us together. I look Elena in the eyes for a second, and we smile together cheerfully. After all, this is far from being our last show."
What is Harvard looking for in your essay?
- Passion and motivation: What makes you who you are? What are you passionate about?
- Vulnerability: Your essay does not have to be a demonstration of perfection, but a story about growth.
- Originality: Do not copy generic formulas. Think about which aspect of your life is truly unique.
- The capacity for introspection: Show that you can understand and learn from your experiences.
- Connection: How have you influenced others, or how have you been influenced by them?
Your story, told authentically
When you write your essay for Harvard, imagine yourself speaking directly to the people who read it. Let your story be honest, captivating, and memorable. Be vulnerable, but also brave. Do not try to impress with sophisticated phrases or exaggerations, admissions officers are looking for authenticity.
When you finish your essay, ask yourself: "Is this my story? Is this my true voice?". If the answer is "yes," then you have created not just an essay, but a real chance to take a step closer to Harvard.
The story of Ekaterina, who got into Harvard through Early Action

Preparing with our mentors helped her develop her creative writing skills, and she learned to highlight what sets her apart, her values and her personality, in captivating essays.
