Oxford and Cambridge
The 2 universities that define British education. Oxford, the oldest English-speaking university (c. 1096, 930 years). Cambridge, founded in 1209 as a split from Oxford (817 years). The college system, one-to-one tutorials, UCAS deadline 15 October. One unique rule: you can apply to only one of them per cycle, not both.
Oxbridge is the collective name for Oxford and Cambridge, the 2 supreme universities in Great Britain, founded more than 800 years apart but linked by tradition: Cambridge was founded in 1209 when a group of scholars broke away from Oxford after a conflict with the townspeople. Ever since, the 2 have rivalled each other without pause, in academics, sport (the annual Boat Race since 1829), Nobels (Cambridge has 121, Oxford 73) and British prime ministers (Oxford has produced 31, Cambridge 14).
For Romanian students, Oxbridge means a fundamentally different experience from the USA: there is NO Liberal Arts, you declare your specialisation (the course) at application and you do it for 3 years with no change. There are NO flexible multiple applications, through UCAS you apply to a maximum of 5 UK universities in total, and you cannot apply to Oxford AND Cambridge in the same year, only to one. The deadline is 15 October (vs 1 January in the USA), so the whole application must be ready at the start of Year 13. The college system (44 at Oxford, 31 at Cambridge) determines your day-to-day life, but the final accreditation comes from the university. Costs for intl: Oxford £37,380-£62,820/year, Cambridge £29,052-£70,554/year plus a college fee of £11,500-£14,950/year (unique in the UK). Approximately £45,000-£85,000 total/year with accommodation and meals.
The 2 Oxbridge universities
Both with the college system and one-to-one tutorials (Oxford) or supervisions (Cambridge). Key distinctions for a Romanian: candidate profile, mandatory tests, intl rates, real costs.

University of Oxford
📍 Oxford, England · Founded c. 1096 (930 years)
- PPE
- Medicine
- Law
- Physics
- Economics
The oldest English-speaking university. Tutorial system (1-2 students with one professor, weekly) unique in the world. PPE (Philosophy, Politics, Economics) is the university's iconic course, it has produced the majority of British PMs. NEW 2026: reformed admission tests (ESAT, TARA, TMUA replace TSA, MAT, BMAT).

University of Cambridge
📍 Cambridge, England · Founded 1209 (817 years)
- Math
- Engineering
- Natural Sciences
- CS
- Medicine
More selective than Oxford for intl. 121 affiliated Nobel laureates (the most in the world). Supervisions system (1-3 students with a professor). Plus My Cambridge Application mandatory and separate from UCAS.
See the Cambridge guide⚠️ The critical Oxbridge rule
You cannot apply to Oxford AND Cambridge in the same UCAS cycle (official Cambridge quote: "You can't apply to both the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford in the same year"). You must choose ONE only. For Romanians: the decision is made in Year 12, based on your profile, your desired course (PPE is only at Oxford, Natural Sciences is only at Cambridge), and the university vibe. If you are rejected in year one, you can apply to the other in year two as a gap year.
How to apply to Oxbridge
The process is similar at the 2 universities, through UCAS, but with stricter deadlines and mandatory admission tests. Very different from the USA: you choose the course (specialisation) at application, not in year 2.
UCAS (NOT Common App!)
You apply through UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service), the single platform for all UK universities. A maximum of 5 choices in total, of which only 1 can be Oxford OR Cambridge. Application fee: £28.50 for 5 choices. Open: September. Deadline for Oxbridge: 15 October 6pm UK time (much earlier than the other UK universities, which have a 14 January 2026 deadline). The remaining UCAS slots can be completed by January as a backup.
Choosing the course plus the college
At application you choose: (1) the course (specialisation), e.g. PPE at Oxford or Natural Sciences at Cambridge. You cannot change it later, it is a 3-4 year commitment; (2) the college (44 at Oxford, 29 UG at Cambridge), each with its own culture, traditions, halls of residence, dining halls. You can choose a specific college or make an open application (the university allocates one to you). For Romanians: popular colleges (Trinity, King's at Cambridge; Christ Church, Magdalen at Oxford) are more competitive, choose strategically.
Mandatory admission tests (NEW 2026)
Oxford reformed all its tests for 2026: ESAT (Engineering, Natural Sciences), TARA (Geography, History), TMUA (Math, CS, Economics) replace the legacy tests TSA, MAT, BMAT. Cambridge uses similar tests: ESAT, TMUA, ECAA (Economics), plus STEP for Math (extremely difficult). For Medicine: UCAT (replaced BMAT). For Law: LNAT. Registration: August-October. For Romanians: the tests are at Pearson VUE test centres in Bucharest or online. Serious preparation required (3-6 months minimum).
Personal Statement (4,000 characters)
Very different from the USA. The UCAS Personal Statement is a single one for all 5 choices, max 4,000 characters (~660 words) and strictly academic. No personal stories, traumas, or creative essays are accepted, the focus is exclusively on the academic motivation for the chosen course. For Romanians: 80% about the chosen course (books read, your own research, evidence of academic interest), 20% about relevant extracurricular activities. You send the same Personal Statement to all 5 universities, so it must be specific enough for your course, yet adaptable.
Cambridge plus: My Cambridge Application
Unlike Oxford, which uses only UCAS plus the tests, Cambridge also requires "My Cambridge Application", an additional form received by email after UCAS submission. It contains: education details, application mode (specific college or open), personal context, opportunities to explain circumstances. My Cambridge Application deadline: 22 October 2026 6pm UK time (after UCAS). For Romanians: complete it immediately after UCAS, it contains essential fields such as "Education in More Detail" and "Application Choices".
Interviews (December, decisive)
~3 in 4 applicants shortlisted for interview (a high percentage vs the USA). Oxford: interviews pre-Christmas (mid-December), 2-3 themed interviews with admissions tutors. Cambridge: interviews mid-December, similarly 2 interviews. Format for Romanians: virtual via Microsoft Teams or Zoom (post-pandemic), 20-30 minutes each. They are academically intensive, you are given problems to solve in real time, "why" type questions to deconstruct your logic. Final decision: January (Oxford) and February (Cambridge). Offer: conditional on predicted Baccalaureate or A-Level grades.
Why choose Oxbridge
Four advantages that make Oxbridge unique vs the USA Ivy League or other UK universities. For Romanians, they matter differently than for Americans or Britons.
One-to-one tutorial system, unique in the world
The most distinctive Oxbridge attribute. At Oxford, a tutorial system: 1-2 students with one professor (usually a global expert in the field), weekly, 1-2 hours. You present your essay, the professor attacks it, you debate. At Cambridge: supervisions, similar but 1-3 students. For Romanians: this academic intimacy is unmatched, you get direct feedback from the best professors in the world. Unlike Harvard or Yale where one professor has 30 students in class, at Oxbridge you have direct tutorial access. An ideal format for those oriented towards research, critical thinking, debate.
BA in 3 years, you save a whole year
Oxbridge undergrad programmes are 3 years for a BA (Bachelor of Arts) or BSc (Bachelor of Science), unlike the 4 years in the USA. Exception: integrated courses such as Mathematics (4 years at Cambridge MMath, integrated with an MMath master's degree), Engineering (4 years MEng), Medicine (6 years). For Romanians: you save 1 year of tuition (~£40-70k!) plus 1 year of living costs (~£15k). Plus: you start your professional career or master's 1 year earlier. This is a major financial and time advantage vs USA Ivies. Caveat: the programme is intense, with no Liberal Arts exploration from year 1.
Unmatched global prestige, recognised in Romania
Oxford QS World Ranking 2026: number 4, Cambridge: number 5. Instant recognition in any country in the world, including in Romania where an Oxford or Cambridge on your CV opens doors at any employer, master's or doctorate. For Romanians oriented towards European careers: Oxbridge has a stronger reputation in the EU than USA Ivies. For careers in government, City of London finance, Big 4 consulting, academia: Oxbridge is the optimal route. For careers in USA tech or finance: the Ivies or Stanford remain better. For worldwide academic careers: Cambridge has 121 Nobel laureates (the most in the world), Oxford 73.
Lower total costs vs USA Ivies
Total Oxbridge intl cost: £45,000-£85,000 per year. Total USA Ivies full cost: £65,000-£80,000 per year (GBP equivalent for tuition plus living costs). For Romanians who pay full cost, Oxbridge can be £15,000-£25,000 cheaper per year. Plus, only 3 years vs 4 years, you save another whole year (~£60,000-£85,000). Total saved vs USA Ivies full-cost: ~£90,000-£170,000. MAJOR caveat: Oxbridge has very limited scholarships for intl (Rhodes for graduates, Cambridge Trust, etc.) unlike the need-blind Ivies that cover 100% of need. For Romanians with high financial need, the need-blind USA Ivies (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Dartmouth) remain more accessible.
